Hi,

I was able to isolate the problem on my engine. The soot was condensation and goes away when the engine warms up. I'm not burning oil, I have an oil leak on the back of the block.

I know that the proper way to fix this is to replace the seal, but before I pull the whole engine, is there anything I can try that might work? I know that there are additives that can work. I figure the worst that can happen is that I make the seals worse, which I would have to replace anyways. Any ideas?

Thanks,

Darian

Fix the leak. I don't put anything in my oil gallery but oil.

You say in the back of the block, but where at? On this engine or any engine for the most part, leaking oil has no additive-bandaid. Your only recourse is to replace the failed seal because the rubber has crystalized from the heat and has lost its elasticity.

I'm not sure where it's leaking yet, I'll have to pull it to tell.

Thanks,

deff dont need to pull bro, its either a rear main seal, valve cover gasket, or half moon gasket under valve cover at back of head.

worst case scenario you'll have to pull your transmission, clutch/flywheel.

Man Ive got the same deal, but both my mains are leaking. What with the really short amount of time it takes to pull the CA and transmission together, I don't see why anyone would want to do it in car. Congratulations, you have the gayest leak to fix on an automobile. We should start a club.

I guess we should look on the bright side, at least we don't have to worry about rust on the bottom of our cars...

Thanks everyone.

I have the same deal after i rebuilt mine and added to many washers to my oil pump spring. Can be assd taking the washers out as it only leaks a small amount and still want to run high pressure. I saw on a rebiuld thread an aluminium collar which replaces the main seal with an o-ring has a better seal than the standard rear main which is gauranteed to leak when old/HP oil pump. does anyone know if they sell them off the shelf or maybe custom made? the thread didn't mention where/who
