i got a gt28rs and i am thinking about getting a topmount manifold, but i was woundering if it is bad to change a internal wastgated turbo to an external by just welding the the valve shut on the exhaust houseing?

does this have any effect on performance if i change it to external?

thanks allot

As long as the welding is done properly it will be fine.

Why not remove the flapper valve and weld a short pipe with a wastegate flange on it to the hole? It works well and allows the use on the stock manifold.

it can be done, like ppl say, but why? you either stick with the internal, or buy a new turbo that needs an external. no performance gains will be felt from changing the wastegate. if your just after venting the wastegate to atmosphere, you can do it with a custom elbow.
