Ozzie's post just had me thinking. There just aren't very many of us out there... especially with Q45a's that are actually operating. It's tough to find help, even here on NICO, because the system is just so damned rare.

I thought a little roll call might be in order... it might be nice if we knew who else was out there keeping the active alive.

So post up... what active do you own? Give us some details, nothing too in depth, just the basics.

Personally, I have two of them in my driveway. My original one, which I sold to my dad, and my second one which is now my daily driver.

My dad's has roughly 150K on it and is still active...sort of. It needs the accums replaced and probably needs one of the actuators (drivers rear) replaced due to fluid leaks. Overall the system still works... just not very well.

Mine has 110K on it and is working great. Not throwing any codes at the moment (hope that lasts), but could still use some help. I have replaced the 4 accums at the wheels but really need to replace the other 5. Front and rear pressure control units need to be replaced, I think, because the car doesn't seem to control front/rear body roll very well.

Anyway... post up, peeps.

Well, you know I have one

1990 G50.Imported from Japan.120,000 kms on the clockTiming chain guides replacedActive suspension started working again the other day, after an 8 month hiatus of operation.

I think that's it.I know there are a few people who have converted their active to a standard suspension setup. I guess that's an option if the system becomes too expensive to repair...

Well, there's Texasoil. he has two A's. He also recharges acumulators as a side business.

What exactly seperates an "A" from a normal Q45? Does it have air ride suspension? When I went in to have my strut looked at, the mechanic mentioned that the bill would be up over $1K if it was equipped with air ride called "FSM", "TSM", or something. Also, what's so different about a Q45t?

The "A" stands for active suspension.A complex system of hydraulic pumps and actuators, accumulators, and valves to direct flow of the fluid....

That may help explain it a bit better.

I have one too. A '92 with 170K miles. Chain guides and accumulators recharged at my own redneck garage. It's sitting right now waiting on 2 fuel injectors (something about having the 540i bmw to drive instead that keeps the Q from getting quickly fixed). My rear actuators were leaking but I put in some Marvel Mystery Oil (think it was Texasoil that recommended that) and will see if they continue to leak. Otherwise it's rust free and a delight to drive.

Hello NICO,

Newbie here with flat 91 Q45A that would like to have it functioning since they are so rare. I moved to Jersery from FL about 3 months ago and need a mechanic in this area. Are there any around Edison that anyone knows of.

Contact Keith Bowers (texasoil) and enlist his help. You will not be able to restore your active without it...at least, not for less than $5K.

Thanks Ozzie, I found the site just through searching the net looking for information on the Q45... Great site here...Yeh when u come down we'll have to catch up for sure. I'd say its fair rare to see two infiniti's together down under, i have never seen one except mine...

I have contacted Keith and gotten the information needed. I need someone willing to work on my Q. One Infiniti tech said he can't wait until all the actives are in the junk yard.

Honestly... a lot of the essential stuff on the active is relatively easy to work on. I would take a look at some of the install instructions that Keith gives. I did the 4 accums on mine in about an hour with some help from my bro-in-law.

I dont own an active, but PLEASE, if your reading this...

DO NOT GET AN ACTIVE UNLESS YOUR GOING TO FIX IT. IT MAKES ME SICK TO THINK THAT SOMEONE COULD TAKE ONE OF THESE AND CONVERT IT OR JUST BEAT IT AROUND.

If you dont want to deal with an active Q, dont get one. there are plenty more standard Qs to enjoy, which people still cant seem to maintain.

I've had my active for about 2 years now. After buying it I had the timing chain and guides replaced. Then with the help of Wes and Keith I was able to replace the upper links, bushing. Next the active was throwing codes at me. So I replaced the fore/aft G sensor, and the 4 accumulators. Subsequently, my car had been trouble free until last month when I began to leak active fluid from my passenger side rear wheel. A quick call to Keith and a 15 cent "O" ring. and I'm back on the road. I can't speak for everyone but my car has been pretty much trouble free and the active has been more enjoyable and reliable than I could have ever hoped for. Again thanks to this forum.

As far as I know, mine is an "a". I have no badge on the rear... It's a '94 with 116k on it, I haven't gotten much into the system yet, it seems to be working though. Any help would be great. How do I check accumulators and the codes?

Active soon. I have been looking. Haven't found the one I want yet.

I drove a 91 and a 95 from 91 through 2001. Several cars since then. None have compared.

Just picked up a Solstice GXP, so I have a hotted up car. Plans for the Q; properly working active suspenstion, really good brakes, and a supercharger.

By the way. To you who are trying to figure out if you have an "active" suspension car, there are at least 3 or 4 tell tale signs.

1. A small "a" after "45" on the trunk lid. It is a stick on so may or may not be there.

2. A white lettered decal at the base of the rear window that says something like "Full Active Suspension". Again a stick on, may or may not be there.

3. In the car, between the center arm rest and the area where the shifter and window switches are, there is a small, rotary, two position switch, next to the CD controller in the older cars, next the seat warmer switches on 94 and 95's. It is labeled with an "N" and an "H". If your car has active, it WILL be there.

4. Under the hood. There will be a tube running to the top of each shock tower, kind of into the plastic dust caps. It is about 1/2", of slightly smaller, in diameter.

There are additional ways to tell if you have an active suspension, but these four are the quick and dirty.

Happy driving,

Bruce

Ozzie,

Here in the US, I was under the impression that all actives were 91 model year through 95.

Anyone have info about actives coming in the 90 model year in the US? If so I will broaden my search.

Thanks

Bruce
