When the car is runnig it sounds as if a pump is running at the rear of the car. Is this typical for the Q45a?

And it would probably be best not to run the car until the pump is replaced, as you will discover why when you read the posts.

I will search on the fuel pump topic. I am intrigued by the thought it might be an amp. Would this make a noise even with the stereo turned off?

No. It's the pump.

To be more precise the sound is a light humming sound which is evident when the car is idling but too low in volume to hear when driving. Any advice on where to source a pump. I can see that "Auto Parts People" have them.

Thanks

Oh, the "amp" comment was more a descriptive, than a possible source.

If you can hear it easily at idle, do as I did and pull the radio fuse and see if it changes, then pull the fuel pump fuse and notice the noise stop before the motor stalls.

It's a DIY believe it or not.

The amp is definately not the noise if the radio is off... all four amps are fed by a relay (behind the ECU)that's controlled by the radio.

You're at about the right mileage for the noise to start a new pump... 75K right? My first was loud when I bought the car at 80K. Second was about the same but I let it go too long... you'll find my post with the fried FPCU in your search!

Replace the fuel pump ASAP. If not, you will have to replace the pump and the controller. The controller cost alot more than the pump.

We are narrowing in on the current that melts the controller.

My estimate is that a warm idle reading exceeding 5.000 amperes is the danger point..........not to say lower might not fail depending on temperature in trunk.

3 brand new ones measured so far 3.1-3.5 amperes.Again mine [3rd one] is at 4.2 amperes [70F ambient] and started the hum 30 days ago. I am measuring every week now. I guess I'll have to waste a controller to find out ..........then there will still be a variance.
