problem with timing after installing new head

were having problems with setting the timing on a 84 300zx non turbo we replaced the right side head with a rebuilt head that came off an 86 maxima with the same motor code vg30 e 2960cc motor we set all the marks right andc followed the book step by step and when we started the car the timing was off again what are we doing wrong
