I was about to pick up my car today from the shop, only to find problems with the brand new Garrett GT28R that I bought.

When we started up the car and let it idle, there is some clinking noises coming from the turbine. Give in more gas, the clinking noises gets more frequent and louder!

Couldn't figure out what it was at first, because the turbo is spankling new with no shaft play what so ever.

We took out the intake pipe and found the problem, the inlet turbine wheel is actually grinding slightly against the housing. You can only detect this problem only when the engine is running causing the wheel to spin, the noise is not there if you only spin the wheel with your finger.

So without taking the chance I request to have the turbo taken out again and have it re-built. More money down the drain!!

What pissed me off is the turbo is brand new, I spent the extra money for peace of mind, but now only making more problems!!

And what are the freaking chances of a faulty turbo from Garrett? Is it just my luck or what?

Let me hear what you guys have to say, Im so confused.

You mean sent back to Garrett I assume. I don't know of a single shop that rebuilds BB turbos.

Yeah, send that thing back.....just make sure its a real Garrett before you send it to "Garrett". Better yet, have the shop vendor you bought it from send it back, they have the distributorship anyhow.

"I think, therefore I am" does not work with garrett turbos..

I don't really understand the unplug cas part. I don't know what it is, what it will do or how to do it.

can I just drip oil into the oil hole(s) of the turbo and spin the turbines like crazy?

You need to prime the oiling system. The engine needs to be NOT FIRING, but spinning. Disconnecting the CAS will allow you to CRANK, but not fire. That will prime/pressurise the oiling system..Umm, you're turbo is nuked, when you get the replacement, dripping oil into the fill/drain will DO NOTHING!

An easy one. Once the turbo is mounted and ready to go, remove the OIL DRAIN line from the turbo. Crank the motor in 5 ~ 7 second bursts till about 1 cup or so of oil has come out of the turbo drain. You'll be primed then..

before you go blaming the guy for messing up, re-read his post. It seems obvious to me that he had it installed for him. I don't think he did the work. I would HOPE that a shop knows better. If not, I would hold them responsible. Good luck with this, and I'm sorry to hear about your mis-fortune.

My turbo was installed at a shop, they are now blaming the turbo being faulty.

As I purchased the turbo from a different shop, they are taking no responsibility for this.

Im in the middle of the situation, as the shop who sold me the turbo claimed it was brand new with no problems.

Im really pissed right now.

I paid by cash at a local shop with an invoice.

The shop who installed it is going to remove the turbo and have a turbo shop inspect it.

If it is faulty then I must return it and get my money back.

Or if it is minor issue, I may need the housing to be regrinded so there is no contact with the compressor.

Ive been very bad luck with cars for the past week.

First of all my Honda Prelude engine is blown due to timing belt slipped out, its gonna cost me few grands just to get it rebuild.

And now my brand new turbo is fu*ked up because of faulty installation.

Apparently both of my cars are down, and not sure for how long!!

What the heck is happening to me??

Sorry to rant here, but I feel like ****.

Just got a call from the shop.

It turns out to be the metal chunks coming off the turbo manifold, they got inside the turbine and damaged the shaft.

Guess what turbo manifold that is, SSautocrap SH*T

Save yourself some money and avoid buying parts from these guys, they suck sh*t!!

if its the compressor wheel touching it cant be the manifold debris unless it damaged the turbine blades and ben the shaft, which you said they said, ??, so make sure you see it for yourself and its not the shop trying to avoid liability by blaming someone else (SSAC) not saying it couldnt be the manifodl debris - jsut be certian...

Problem is Im at work right now so I can only listen to what he told me on the phone.

According to him, the shaft is now slightly bent forcing the turbine wheel to grind the housing. And there are lots of metal chunks in the turbine which is the cause of damaging the blade damage....

The turbo is on its way to get inspected by the a Garrett authorized dealer here, if the shaft play is due to manufacturer defect they will replace it for free.

But if its other cause or improper installation, I may have to eat up the cost.

i'm pretty sure all the SSA manifolds have metal junk left handing from the welded seems on the inside. i inspected the manifold before i even thought about putting it on the car and it definitely has it.

Im screwed on this one.

The Garrett dealer has inspected the turbo and found pieces of metal inside the turbine, the compressor and shaft are both damaged. So waranty is already out of the question.

More money down the drain, thanks to SSACrap!!!!

The shop says the SSAC manifold is too crappy and would not recommend me to use it anymore, otherwise it may destroy me turbo again sometime down the road.

Do you guys have the same problem?

The worst thing is they are not taking the responsibility for damaging the turbo. Its all blamed to the poor design of the SSAC.

I cant believe im spending so much money so for a freaking turbo upgrade!!!

I have even ordered the FMIC from them, I may probably sell it now without taking the risk again.

Anyway, what are my chances to get my money back for a faulty turbo manifold?? worst of all, it destroyed my turbo!!
