about half the times i get gas, when i open the gas tank, it makes a sound like air rushing in, or air rushing out, not sure, but there's uneven pressure in there. what's the deal? i had bad pcv valve on my old truck that had the same effect on the pressure in the gas tank. is that it? or is it something else?thanks

i believe that means your tank is working properly and holding pressure preventing harmful fumes from leaking out and into the environment.

Mine does this everytime I get gas.. it even has a little label on the gas door that has a brief explanation about the pressure. Because of that I have never thought twice about it.

Wow, I actually helped someone with a problem rather than asking for advice about one of my problems..

I guess we all have to start somewhere! :D

Dang ol dang! Everyone tells me that I should get it fixed, but how the fook do I fix it when I have absolutely no idea why it is happening in the first place?

Does anyone have any idea what this problem could be?

Never again will I take a car to a shop.

Ever. (well maybe for alignments)

Unless it is a brand new car and is still under warranty I refuse to take a car to a dealership. Especially in this college town all of them will totally ream you up the butt without any lube whatsoever. I have a shop of my own that has just about everything except a hydraulic lift, so doing the work myself is no problem whatsoever, I just need to know what the problem is. Oh well, maybe I can just deal with it for now and then delve further into it whenever I get my SR from Dauntt (which will be swapped by me in my shop)

so there is still no idea what is going on with this? And to add fuel to the fire, the tank will also pressurize if the car is sitting in the sun with the gas cap on, I came outside one day and there was a long trail of gasoline running down my driveway and pooling up in the gutter things :) As it sits now, I have the gas cap on bu not tightened down.

i've had to bite the bullet and go to the dealership a few times, just to find out what wrong. but then i'd go home and fix it myself. about $100 to hook it up to the computer and diagnose it, but then you save on parts by not having to guess and fix things that weren't broken, plus you save time. i agree though...i try to avoid shops whenever i can!

ok, the gas tank has pressure in it to give it a boost of pressure going into the fuel rail. my friends avenger wouldnt run one time because the gas cap wasnt tightened enough and there was no pressure.

I belive that pressure in the tank is a good thing. It lets you know that there are no leaks and it is very normal. just turn the cap slowly and let the air out first when you gas up. I belive it builds pressure because of the gas return from the engine so the harder you drive it the more pressure you will build up.
