power steering question

how would i troubleshoot the power steering pump on the j???im not sure whether its the rack or the pump any info would be appreciated-K

just REALLY differnt to turn...no noise, no leaks, no play, it sucks

fluid is dark...dont know what to sniff for in the fluid...there is fluid...there is a belt....how would it be related to transmission

failed ps pump usually results in noise and difficult to trun. I would change the fluid to mobil 1 ATF and see how much that helps.

besides pump, check inner and outter tie rods.

my experience:i changed both the inner and outter tie rods in the summer. my J had only about 7k miles but the ball joints of the inner tension rod is actually very loose already. night-day dfference if compared to a new unit.

after replaceing the rods. handling is extremly SHARP. it reminds me of my friends bmw 330ci - point and shoot steering accuracy!

Add some lucas power steering fluid too.

The level of power assist is inversely proportional to the vehicle speed of travel = more assist for slow speed maneuvers and less assist to keep you going straight down the road at high speeds.

When my pump went out, well it was actually locking up at times and putting such a load on the motor that it would stall the motor but besides that my symptoms were like yours. Mine never squealed, made a noise or felt jumpy.Your mechanic should be able to diagnose it for you because mine told me before he looked at it that it would be either the rack or the pump or both(rack goes out first ruining pump).My mechanic replace the ps pump and thoroughly flush out the rack now I can drive though parking lots turning with 1 finger.
