Car: Not a 240 =) Thinking of getting one again...

Post

Hi all. Even tho I know that this is a 240sx forum, I would seriously like some serious and honest answers.

Well I had a '87 Camaro I-roc with ZZ4 engine which has about 350hp before. When I would even tap the acceleration it would put me in my seat. I sold that car over 2 months ago and was most likely to buy a 240sx but now it got me thinking, will the 240sx have the power I desire? I never driven one so I have no idea how good the 240sx is. (Reason why I'm always looking around general section of the forum and never posting anything about 240sx). Only thing I didnt like about the camaro is that the steering was very stiff. If I do get a 240sx, it will be S13 not sure wether its gonna be SOHC or DOHC and 5 speed, I will be driving it stock until I save up enough money to get an engine swap, probably SR or CA. I have searched trying to get some kind of idea of power of these engines avaliable for S13 but I need some honest answer, such as:

ET 1/4 time with all 3 engines (Just by looking at the forum I figured low 16s for KA24E? and DE? not sure 5speed).

Low 14s with SR20DET with 7psi? about right?

Whats the time for CA?

PLEASE ANY ANSWERS WILL BE APPRECIATED!

Sorry for the long post:confused:

My mother has an 89 Iroc Z28 Auto. I have a 'stock' Sr20.. My car is quick, maybe even fast for an import... but it doesnt have that deep tone, bottom end torque raw power feel that american muscle has.

Tho I dont think i'd trade my car for hers. NOt to mention my insurance is nothing compared to what it would be..

how come you sold the camaro?

I dont think you can really compare an import to a domestic muscle car... they both obviously have their strengths. you just need to ask yourself what kind of car you want to drive (and what you can afford) and pick based on that.

The ETs look pretty good... I donno bout the KA24E though, I think it might be a bit slower but maybe not... screw the SOHC though.. no reason to get a SOHC when a DOHC is so easy to find..

350 hp out of a 4cyl and out of a v8 are two different things.

Well my insurance was crazy first of all with that and i can drive like 10 blocks and I'll run out of gas (u get the point).

Well I want a car that will be good in handling but also get that kick when u accelerate and get good E/T 1/4 time on the tracks.

Now... 240sx will of course be superior in handling but a little moded 240sx will be after to be faster?

Also how good are the CA engines?

Thanx guys

don't know much about the ca's, but a lot of people like them.

don't throw out the idea of a ka-t though, there is plenty of power in those as well.

Naturally, a 4 banger will solve both of those things. If you're really looking for those things to be fixed though, you cant exactly ask for a 350 hp car with 'pin you in the seat' power. Maybe a souped up 240 can get to 350hp and keep the insurance prices at bay, but it will sure guzzle gas... you cant have your cake and eat it too man! sorry! :(

Ka-T is a good idea also i know but Turbo kits for 240sx will have to be cumtomed so price will be about 2k? give or take and also will prob have to rebuild the engine since if I do get it it will have high mileage and turboing it wont be a good idea. Thats why I'm just thinking of taking the easy way of getting a different engine.

I'm also wanting to buy 240sx more then camaro, maybe its because since I had a camaro already I would like to try a 240 now? but anyways, I'm not much of a motorhead so I'm still learning everyday about cars, this forum has taught me alot about 240sx AND still learning more to go. 240sx seems to be a very reliable car, good mpg, good handler, and seems like can get pretty high HP out of it.

Can anyone give me some cons and pros for 240sx? I'm sorry for being such a noob... I did search and I've gotten some answers but I would still like to hear an answer thats directly pointed to me. Thanx

You seem to have a decent handle on the pros and cons already.

Pros:Handles, Smooth lines, reliable, low insurance cost, low gas cost, easily modable, engine options. excellent community

Cons:Not a V8, hard to get parts(Sr/Ca swap), most are high miles, Rebuild stock motor or Swap for high HP, small back seat, tight(but not impossible) engine bay, many have some rusting

I just read this really long post about SR vs KA. From what I learned there is that SR can be made to be fast with less money spent than KA. Only thing I dont get is that why do people say KA is better for street then the SR?

probably just b/c if a water pump goes out on the SR you cant just run down to NAPA and pick it up.. And if it isnt something you can fix yourself, your neighborhood mechanic has never even seen that motor before.. so you are kinda stuck

First off, I DON"T want this to turn into a SR versus a KA battle,

but everyone has their own opinions.......... so here is mine.

BOTH MOTORS ARE GREAT motors, but I like the powerband out of the ka a lil better than the sr, plus I like the torque better than the HP. And for some unkown reason, I like to do things a lil different, and since the sr is so popular right now (for its very DESERVED reason might I add), I like to do things the opposite of what the trend is.

REMEMBER folks please!!!! no SR vs. KA battles here please!!!!!!

Sorry Former_240_s14. I didnt mean it to sound like a sr vs. ka battle, I was just simply reading off something from that post. but what do you mean by you likeing the powerband out of KA? I dont understand what that means.

No, I didn't think you were turning it into a battle, I just didn't want to see it turn into one. I have much respect for both motors! : )

What I mean by powerband is the area of rpm's that you get the best area of torque/hp.
