Dyno day.

Good News: 442hp, 412tq, much flatter curve.

Bad news: When going for 500, Clutch decided not to play anymore. I need to figure out if I had it set incorrectly. Ripping it out Monday for inspection.

Stll...the 442 makes me pretty happy. Tuner (Brice Yingling at Alamo Autosports) said, based on what he saw today, it'll make 500 pretty easily. Just need to sort he clutch.

A few (crappy) cell phone pics because I'm an idiot and I forgot to take my camera. my bad.

Me behind the wheel and Brice Yingling from Alamo Autosports working his magic with the AEM:

I'll get some pics of the clutch when we get it out.

If any of you has good experience with a Wilwood clutch and setting it up with the stock slave cylinder, I'm all ears. I may have missed something in the setup.

Bye.

Got the clutch out. That was about as fun as a fistfight. News flash: that's not a stage 5 in there...it's a stage 4. Not sure how much dofference there is, but now we know. It goes to Brice at alamo tomorrow where he'll measure the disk and have a look at everything. I'm so afraid we'll have to go twin disk...just can't afford it right now.also found out that there is no adjustment at the wilwood MC...and of course there's none at the slave...so, when it's bled properly there should be just enough pressure on the pin to hold it in the cup on the fork. which it did. There's no free travel before engagement (and according to wilwood, there shouldn't be). As soon as your foot hits the pedal, it starts actuating the slave. Last year I had the smaller 5/8 bore MC (less volume) and there was a bit more stroke for engagement, and it never overcentered. With the 3/4 bore there's less travel and it overcenters about halfway through the throw. So, to get a longer throw, (I don't want MUCH more) I need to go back to the 5/8 MC.So, the problem wasn't the clutch not being adjusted. It just couldn't hold the power.

We shall see....

Some photos of the clutch for you.

pressure plate.

Flywheel.

Disk.

stuff.

There it is.

More tomorrow.

bye.

Did some research and found that I did have the clutch set correctly. There is no adjustment on the slave (which I'm sure you all know) and after talking to Wilwood I now know that there will be enough pressure in the line to hold the pin on the slave against the cup on the fork, but not enough to engage the clutch until the pedal is pressed. Also found out that there is no "free play" in this system and if I want a longer stroke I need to go with a smaller MC (which I figured), and I probably will. We simply overpowered the pressure plate. And it is a stage 5, after all.

We have a dual drilled flywheel so Competition Clutch is sending us some frankenstein pressure plate and disk that they have assured us can handle up to 600 ft lbs of torque. The turbo will probably stop making power around 500hp/500tq, so this new clutch should do well enough for us. Just glad I don't have to go multi disk.

If we get the new clutch in by Friday we will be back on the dyno Saturday. Going to see if we can make the 500 number, and then dial it right back down to 400 for the race (a really clean, well sorted 400). We'll wait till the road is fully paved before puttting the screws to it on the Hill.

Bye!

Videos from last nights Dyno: Finally got it to 469hp @ 20psi before a lean condition kept us from proceeding. I need to replace the fuel filters and make sure the fuel pump is getting a full 12V. Still. I'm happy with where we ended up. I'm going to drive the car at 420hp/390tq for a while and we'll go from there.

Whoa, dunno how I missed these updates. I love your build so much and I really like your making the fenderwells removable for access. I'll keep my fingers cross on the 500 number for you guys. Keep the updates coming! Love it!

Got the frame done for the splitter and the front bumper. In the next day or so I'll have the headlights mounted and the few other odds and ends finished up. I'm expecting to have it over at PTP this week for aligning and corner balancing. Then off to Mineral Wells for testing either late this week or early next. Can't wait.

Some pictures for you:

Very nice! I love it! I'm trying hard to tell in the pics, but what did you make the splitter from? Pics make it look like metal or a plexi/composite but with all the dirt i'd think metal, but want to ask the stupid question. :)

Btw, hit up Becky, nissangirl74 via pm or email for a NICO banner for that thing!

Splitter is a COT splitter off of a NASCAR. Carbon fiber. I have a NICO Banner on the back window! Although I would like a few more smaller stickers for other places on the car. I'm sure Greg and Becky will get me hooked up before the race in June!

I have several pictures of the column on our web site http://www.fatmanracing.com. Go to the 240SX page and then to the 2009 build section. Which cross bar are you talking about?

New deflector to help the air jump over the hole in the hood.

Finally got a new steering wheel and a rear view mirror.

Driver view.

Playing around with ideas for side plates on the splitter. I want to contain the canards in something like this. Trying to get a bit more adjustable downforce in the rediculously thin air of Pikes Peak. Dunno yet.

Look pretty sick man. When you gonna paint it or are you gonna wrap it again? That splitter looks mean! Love that your KA-T, make me like this build so much more.

I was reading this article about MIT or something that made this program use satellite images and GPS to make the car drive itself, and their goal was to have it drive up pikes peak.

Gonna re-wrap the front probably. But we do have a possible deal in the works that might have us wrapping the hood and roof, or hood and deck, or maybe even the whole car with a major sponsor. We'll at the very least be covering the Shocker logos with Alamo Autosports logos.

With regard to the KA-T...I just couldn't see lopping off a few hundred CC when this motor is more than capable of making good, reliable power and really good torque. Build it right and it's as good as any platform out there.

Testing the Pikes Peak 240SX at Mineral Wells. In car footage. Shaky, I know. I don't have a good quality camera or mount. Maybe someday.

Hi Everyone,

I just had a good friend of ours in Colorado come through for us! We have a brand new set of Kumho's for qualifying and race day! I have no idea which Kumho, but it's a tire they were going to use in the Pikes Peak Open division last year on a car that is comparable in weight and HP to mine. As soon as I find out what it is, I'll let you know.
Some Good news, for sure!!

Thanks everyone!

Just got another set of tires for the race...The set we'll use for Qualifying and race day. Hoosier Radial Wets! Super stoked. Sticky tires that will handle the dirt sections. Good stuff!!!

Two days of practice next week and then again on June 8th. Then a long week and a half to get everything cleaned up and ready to go to Colorado on the 18th.

Damned exciting stuff...getting close.

Got some more testing done at Mineral Wells this past week. Turns out that will be my last test before the Pikes Peak, which is in just a few weeks. Can't believe it's already just about time to leave for the race. I hit the road in just a week and a half.

The car is working really well. I have a good feel for what I can get away with (on not so great tires - the Sumitomo HTRZ). The car makes rediculous power and carries it through the entire powerband. The car is really manageable and when the back end starts to step out it's predictable and easily recovered. I made just a few small shock adjustments on the front and feel like it's pretty well dialed...for my experience level, anyway. I'm sure as I get even more time in the car I'll find things I want to tinker with. But for now, I fell pretty good.

We've got the Kumho Ecsta ASX's for practice and scored a set of Hoosier Radial Wets for Qualifying and Race Day.

Can't wait to get up on the hill and get it moving. They are practicing on Pikes Peak this weekend...I'm bummed that I'm missing it.

HEY! We got a big spot at Fan Fest in Colorado Springs Friday night before the race (25th), if you're in the neighborhood, come by and see us!!
