A friend of mine has a white altima coupe and he painted his grill white to match his car, but he didn't sand down the grill. It looks perfect but will the color last without it being sanded down?

Depends on the paint, weather, parking conditions, and the prep before he painted. My guess it will last a couple of years before it starts peeling. Plastic grills require a light sanding, then cleaning with alcohol and then a tack rag to remove any oil. I used a satin black car paint on mine, then a single coat of clear to help protect the finish.
