I have a 89, that is running hot all the time. I have replaced the water pump and the thermostat, and still she over heats, water seems to be flowing where it should but it is not cooling the engine, the radiator fan is also not turning on. Thanks in advance for the help....Chunk

You said the fan doesn't turn on..... 89 and 90 have mechanical fans, so the fan should start spinning as soon as you start the car. Is it a mechanical fan or did you do an electric fan conversion? Does your rad have an excessive amount of corrosion on it? Are the fins bent up badly. Is there any leaks anywhere, make sure you check the hoses for cracks and make sure the clamps are all tight. Other than that, trying changing your oil, go for a 10w 30 or 10w 40 weight oil.

I have looked at all of those things and they are all ok. the mechanical fan is fine and turns no problem but there must be a add on electrical fan in front of the radiator and it does not turn it is plugged into what looks like a factory wiring harness. I have tested water flow through the radiator and it seems fine (comes out the bottom as fast as it goes in) I am howerver going to change it out for new because of some JB weld issues from the previous owner but I dont think that is my problem.

the smaller fan is for the ac, and comes on when the temp is hot/when the ac is running, do a coolant system flush, even that didnt help mine 100% but it was an improvement

The good news... i had the same exact problem, i traced it to the T-stat (ran the engine without one in), changed it and no luck. The radiator would pulse fluid up and down like there was flow, but the top hose was always hot, and the bottom hose cold (no flow). I replaced the T-stat again, no luck. So i took it out and replaced it with a restrictor plate. It worked. By the way, i used cheap aftermarket T-stats, don't you buy anything but nissan...

But If taking it out does not work, your problem is probably the head gasket. The space on your head gasket between your coolant holes and something else in your head is leaking. Smell the coolant tank under the hood to se if it smells like gas or oil. If not, have a local shop test the coolant tank under your hood for hydrocarbons. Not cheap, but hope it helps.

Hey also an after thought, You did fill the coolant with 50/50 water/coolant, right?

mine was thermostat used one from pepboys aftermarket. put it in a pot of boiling water to make sure it opens and it did. once ur car heats up grab the lower radiator hose. if its warms and hard then the t-stat opened if its cool and soft then its closed. if its not that i would say a headgasket or not enough coolant

Thanks for the info, I will try and get it working without the thermostat. I just hope its not the head gasket or the head.

Wait!!! check the radiator cap first. If it is bad the system can't build pressure and then the heat is on!! also if you have an air pocket in the system the fluid won't move causing overheating too.

Use the bleeder screw on the intake (by the so called t-stat). While running open bleeder , liquid comes out , good no air. No liquid , bad , air. Leave loose and add coolant till liquid comes out.

also check the radiator for cold spots. they will be noticeably colder than the rest of the radiator. if you feel any at all and dont cut your hand off in the fan in the process, you have a clogged radiator as well. like the other dude said, make SURE you bleed the system. air can cause cavitation and destroy your water pump.

I am going to replace the radiator, The previous owner had a firm belief that JB Weld would fix all his problems. I was just hoping I could get away with a month or two before I had to replace it, but alas no. I was working on it 3 days after I bought it. If I could just find a local parts store that could get the right one for me it would be replaced by now.
