Filter doesn't matter, best to use is either Castrol or Penzoil and use only full synthetic or good quality standard oil.

You'll get any number of answers to the "which oil is best" question. For as many people as there are out there with cars, each one will attest to a given oil.

Personally for me that's Mobil1 Synthetic.

As far as filter... don't use Fram. Most other manufacturers (Purolator, Wix, OEM) are going to be about the same. If you want to go nuts, you can use a K&N filter, but for normal driving there's probably not much point to it.

as for an oil filter a few years back Mobil One sold synthetic oil filters for every car you might want to look into that. There filters picked but more debris in your oil than any other in GM cars. They do have them for the Versa I just checked

I have used Mobil 1 in all my cars for at least 15 years.

I'm guessing so. That's the most common weight for modern passenger cars (all 6 new cars my wife and I have bought since '02 used it). IIRC, that's what Nissan said to use, too, when I called them over a year ago when I went through this for Versa #1.

There is a strange looking crush washer on the drain bolt. The dealership claims that this needs to be changed everytime, I am not sure how critical that is, but I have used a new crush washer each time I changed oil on the V. Being my first Nissan, I am not sure if other Nissans use this bizarre looking washer and if the local garage would have them or bother to get a new one or not.

As stated by others, there are many opinions on oil, it is my opinion that synthetic oil is not necessary, a good quality conventional oil like Valvoline or Havoline would be fine for the life of the vehicle. Just follow the recommended oil change interval of 3750 - 7500 miles.

Like a lot of others, I am not a big fan of fram filters. I use Nissan filters, but would also consider a Purolator Pure One if they make one for the Versa. There are other good filters also.

so how crucial would the washer be if I get it from local shops?

Not having changed the oil myself on my Versa, I don't know what sooner4x4 means by "strange looking" crush washer. Basically all the ones I've seen are designed the same, just for different sized bolt.

if it really bothers you, you can go to your Nissan dealer and buy a dozen. They're usually less than a buck each, and that will last you for a long time.

The crush washers used on the Hondas and Toyotas I have owned look like a regular washer. The Honda washer looked like a typical (aluminum?) washer. The Toyota washer is part black and part metallic looking. The Nissan washer on the other hand does not look like a washer at all. It has a strange cross section that crushes down to less than half of it's original thickness when the bolt is tightened. It is a copper color. It can be a real PITA to remove from the bolt sometimes to put a new one on. I am not sure how else to describe it. I have a few in the garage but don't know how to post pictures, and it would have to a very clear close up to capture the detailed (bizarre) shape.

When I saw the Versa washer for the first time, my first thoughts were, it is unlikely that the typical garage or oil change place (non-Nissan) would stock them or bother to use a new one. Again, I do not know how critical it is to always use a new crush washer. On my Toyotas I have used the same washer numerous times, but it just looks like a typical washer that doesn't appear to deform significantly when installed on a tighted bolt, like the Nissan washer does.

The worst thing that could happen from re-using a washer is the possibility of a leak or probably just a very slow drip at the drain plug. If owners aren't reporting leaks or drips then perhaps the need for using a new washer is unneccessary assuming washers are being re-used.

A life time of oil changes at the Nissan dealership for $150? I am curious what the Oil change interval is for this price? 3750 or 7500?

That seems like a great deal. At my dealership their out the door price for a typical oil change is $27. Six oil changes at this price is over $150.

If your dealership service dept. is open on Saturdays, you may be able to get in and out pretty quick on an oil change if you show up when they open. Having an appointment may help also.

Their goal of course is to get you into the service dept where they will try to sell you other services. Don't fall for unneccessary services like fuel induction cleaning, battery services, oil flushes, etc. Consumers need to be familiar with the actual recommended services from the owners manual and only buy what they need, when it is needed.
