So ive searched and searched...

heres some back round:
Purchased from an older lady (original owner)
2005 G35 6MT, 58k.. oil changes at the dealership every 3k with 10w30 Synthetic

Now when i bought the car it needed an oil change. When i changed it yesterday it was 2 quarts low and only 203 miles over the 3k mark from the sticker in the windshield.

Also it has a SLIGHT, what sounds like valve tick.. Owning a ton of nissans... almost all of my cars have done this.

Is this normal? Just bought teh car and REALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLY dont feel like having the car go boom :chuckle: Im pretty car savy and know to watch the oil etc. but where i live theres 3 g35s (04,06,08) all blown motors. so yes.. im going to worry lol

That sounds about right. Mine has used 2 quarts every 3-3500 miles since new .I did the consumption test years ago but didn't qualify for a new engine.

Not a big deal. I buy 5w-30 oil on sale and do my own oil changes so it it not a huge expense. I add a quart every 1k miles. The L mark on the dipstick is 2 quarts low so waiting that long to add oil is not good

What I find hard to understand is why people don't check their oil.

I had a 74 Mazda RX4 Rotary engine (put on over 100k miles) and there were many engine failures because most people never check their oil.

I don't hear any valve tick on mine but even if I I did I wouldn't be too worried about it.
There may be others here that could give you a better answer. I would also ask the dealer the question.

I check and change my oil regularly. There have been tons of posts on this subject over the years. Some use expensive oils or synthetic and argue for longer change intervals than 3k miles. When you do the oil changes yourself and see what comes out of your crankcase after 3k miles it is easy to understand why longer change intervals may not be best for insuring high mileage and long life for your vehicle.

For those that lease and get a new vehicle every 2 to 3 years the sludge that remains in an engine from infrequent oil changes is not going to be a problem until the vehicle perhaps reaches the second, third or forth owner or well over 100k miles.

The oil consumption is not normal but in this case for the VQ it is prone to the issue, especially the REV-UP engine. Nissan even released a TSB for the issue. I have had a new long block courtesy of Infiniti in my 04 and the long block also uses just as much oil as the original engine. Simple design flaw, period.

I would still be concerned as the problem is never going away. 2 qts low is a substantial amount to have lost in that short notice. Every 1k miles you should religiously check the oil and should be time to add some if you are missing 2 qts in 3k miles.

I would add to that the the vehicle engine should have been off for 20 min or so to allow all the oil to drain back to the crankcase. If you pull into a gas station, shut the engine off and attempt to check the oil you will not get an accurate reading.

It seems as though most Infiniti/Nissan engines have some level of oil consumption issue. If you aren't checking your oil level every couple of thousand miles youze a fool! :gapteeth:

I have only owned Nissan/infiniti vehicles and have never had one with this issue.
