I've picked up a lot of used high-end tools at garage sales over the years - the difference in quality and usability over some junky new Chinese-made garbage makes it a no-brainer.

Yes, Im surprised other members haven't attempted it before considering just about everything else has been done. That being said I dont have the torque specs or any information regarding assembly so who knows how this will turn out LOLRyantzer wrote: ↑Tue Mar 22, 2022 8:21 pmThe ABS unit on my 1990 has apparently been leaking for some time, as the mounting bracket has bubbling paint and rust forming on the area beneath the unit. I found a used unit that was completely dry from another 1990 and have it ready to install in the next few weeks when the rest of the brake system is getting an overhaul. Good to know that a rebuild is not outside the realm of someone with decent mechanical skills, should the used unit end up being a leaky mess as well.
Ikr! Gloves are getting pricey, $25 a box last time I checked. Feels better raw, but you gotta wrap it up!!!Q451990 wrote: ↑Tue Mar 22, 2022 9:42 pmKnipex Pliers, and Nitrile Gloves - in this messed up world, they both cost about the same thing! We won't even mention the Snap-On ratchet. As a buddy of mine used to say "rich guys doing rich things..."
In all seriousness, I've spent a good bit of the last year sorting through a lot of vintage tools that I inherited from my Dad. I've learned a lot just researching what's "ebay-able" and really enjoyed using quality stuff instead of my previous collection of Harbor Freight specials.
44 to be exact, 5 extra for materials testing and 2 extra on a bolt sheath (minimal importance, its like a dust cover). There was no exact fit and the measurement was perfectly in-between 2 sizes. Thats the only one I have to sort of "feel out" and use my best judgement.
Thank you, great suggestions! Never would have thought of an external filter, thats definitely getting done. Now to find a reasonably priced TCU. I see one that's 94+ but apparently that's overshooting the sweet spot according to some older posts.3Q Jay wrote: ↑Thu Mar 24, 2022 7:33 pmI'd focus on the trans next (can't recall if you said you had done work there already or not).
Most '90s did not have the pan with the drain plug, although it may have been retrofitted over the years. I'd drop the pan regardless, and clean the magnets and replace the screen. then I'd add a stacked plate cooler (the zenkei's only had a single tube radiator cooler, while the kouki's got two tubes, and also an external filter). Then find the TCU out of a '93 for first gear start.
You have the RE4r03A with the wide ratio gear set!

I've got a spin-on filter kit and cooler that I have plumbed out and ready to drop in for the trans. Thank you 3QJay
You're absolutely right. I dont want to touch this intake again for a while LOL. Found the post I was referencing. Should be fine for the most part. Seems to be related to the gear ratios you mentioned earlier. With parts of scarce as they are I might as well just have it on hand anyway.3Q Jay wrote: ↑Sat Apr 02, 2022 11:25 amOh, and I believe a TCU from a 94 or 95 will be just fine for you as well, but double check. For sure the FGY33 TCU is different, even though they use the same interface connector. And a 96 *might* be different due to OBD-2, but again, you will need to check to be sure.
I keep getting told that they should get here "late next week" whenever I call to check. I will start looking online if they don't arrive by Monday.
fwiw, I have ordered several times fromNo1Dad wrote: ↑Thu Apr 14, 2022 10:05 amI keep getting told that they should get here "late next week" whenever I call to check. I will start looking online if they don't arrive by Monday.
The submerged o rings seem to be holding up well. Theres one that I've been mangling a couple times a week, another that has been compressed between two coins, and the last is just chilling. So far the "swelling" has been negligible @ 2.6% (1.90mm vs 1.95mm) Ill measure them again soon enough to check for expansion and signs of decomposition. At this point I'm sure they're fine......
Maybe I spoke up too soon, everything seemed to be going well until I decided to really push the ABS system. I set down some sand in the rear parking lot and started going at it. After maybe 10 minutes I noticed some seepage. The solenoids themselves may be leaking. I see dampness around their flanges (joint??). Oh well. Back to the drawing board.
Unfortunately yes. Its on the 3rd fluid change since I started working on it a few months ago. I've put in 50 miles today and i noticed a minor improvement but its still slipping out of 2nd gear under moderate acceleration. I'll try an additive but I'm pretty much resigned to the fact that its too late.
Please elaborate on 'slipping out of second gear'?No1Dad wrote: ↑Wed Apr 20, 2022 7:24 pmUnfortunately yes. Its on the 3rd fluid change since I started working on it a few months ago. Im open to try anything. I really dont want to start another major teardown
What specific differences did you notice using Walmart fluid vs anything else? I'm running Valvoline Max life. The solenoids and shift kit are a solid next step since I would need them anyway for the rebuild. I'm also running the 93 TCU right now.3Q Jay wrote: ↑Thu Apr 21, 2022 7:27 amhmmm, might be too far gone.
but if you want to experiment before tearing down for complete rebuild this would be my list:
1) Do NOT use M1 ATF. generic wally world dex/merc seems to have the right friction properties (at least it works waaay better than M1 in all of mine).
2) do a pan drop and magnet clean, change the filter screen
3) do a few iterations with the 2-part BG products ATF flush and conditioner.
4) replace the shift solenoids on the valve body. don't forget the line pressure solenoid.
5) Try the 93-up TCU. I think you were going to do this for 1st gear start anyway.
6) do the (transgo?) valve body shift improver kit.
