Odd sensation during cruise control?

On occasion, I'm getting the oddest sensation during cruise control (especially after I've just put it on) - it feels like someone is pushing the car from the rear! Like if you were in a swing, and someone gave you a push from behind.

Has anyone else experienced this? It's weird.

Ehh, don't worry about it. It's just Versatron, the Nissan God making sure you go the speed you want and giving you safe passage.

Seriously, though - is this something I need to worry about?

Is this your first car with cruise control? Sounds like the normal sensation when the cruise kicks up the throttle to regain the set cruise speed range.

What he said.

I get this a lot cruising down hills. The Versa recalculates its throttle and speed under cruise a LOT more frequently than even older cars with cruise, so it will feel like it's modulating its throttle more often. That's all you're feeling.

That must be it - thanks. My 99 Ford Escort did have cruise, which I used all the time, but never had this sensation.

...Or you could look at it the other way; you may have accidentally purchased the "El Diablo" package, and it's the hand of Lucifer himself pushing you to your death!

I have felt that in cruise too. I think it's because, in a conventional auto, the car has to start lagging before it realizes it should shift, and then, there is another delay WHILE it shifts. But you don't have that delay in the CVT Versa so you feel like you're being shoved up a hill when you still expect to be lagging.

Now admit it, how many of you CVT people have let off the gas a titch to "force the shift" like you would in an auto? I have caught myself doing it, and I caught my dad doing it when I let him drive. He is a die-hard Chrysler enthusiast but really loved the CVT. Said he wanted to get a Caliber which also has CVT...then he did some reading and found out that Nissan makes the Caliber's transmission too.

The cruise on my motorcycle also has a similar sensation. It doesn't have a electronic throttle, so some of the lag is take-up of the throttle cables.

If you're dad reads a little further, he'll discover that neither Dodge nor Nissan makes their CVT transmissions. It's made by a 3rd party, I don't remember the name. Fortunately the Nissan motors are fairly smooth. All the reviews of the Chrysler products with CVT's are less than favorable. Expeically the Jeeps. The blocks of the 2.4L motors for Mitsubishi, Chrysler, Hyundai, and I thinkg GM are shared. The heads, assembly and final tuning are unique to each makes.

That same goes for the 6 speed automatic on GM, Dodge, Hyundai, Misubishi, and some Mazdas. I think Ford actually makes their own, as does Toyota.

It's JATCO that you're thinking of:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jatco

They're a Nissan subsidiary, so as far as I'm concerned, it's still Nissan making the transmission for Chrysler.
