I think lighter than black for the leakage reason, charcoal or a light gray, just nothing too shiny.

I am actually leaning towards flat racing orange, I know it'll pop like crazy but the Z is my toy so I may go that way, I am going to the paint store right now to see what else they have around and how much its all gonna cost me. Updates to come.

I think that the Orange would be OK, any color really especially with the black car.I painted the motor in the only black car I have had a medium (Ford) blue, and it looked SHARP...

Thanks, the car is actually Navy Blue but I fugured since the valve covers and timing covers are going to be metallic orange then the rest of it could stand to be flat orange just to match hues. the paint is going to cost me about $100 total and is gonna take about a week to ship so now I am just waiting on bearings and the paint to come in.

Orange will contrast nicely to the blue man, as long as it doesn't blind you to look at, go for it. I was more against a silver/chrome look or black, i forgot you had mentioned orange.

UPDATE: I have been practicing with the VHT while waiting on the bearings and gaskets to come in, I'm glad I didnt order the orange because its WOW bright, I think Im going with a burnt copper for all for the painted components. Here are some picks of the engine masked/prepped and primered and some shots of the 16g elbow I used to practice with.and one of the mess on my little work table

I am picking up a used oven this week so I can bake the painted stuff, once the painting is all done hopefully all the parts i need will be here and i will be able to start putting it back together.

BTW: the color I have settled on for all of the under hood stuff is that metallic orange (burnt copper metallic), it looks a little brighter in the pics then it does in reality but I think it will be a good way of tieing the colors together and not adding any extra hues.

I can only give you ballparks because Ive lost count but it goes something like this. The car (NA $3600), and all the parts so far including JDM engine and all misc parts and machine work. (~$5000-$6000) I really couldnt tell you how much it has cost but as far as this rebuild goes its all fitting in well under $1000

UPDATE: I have been getting owned by work and school so I have had no time to do anything but I did get a sweet little package in the mail friday, (all of the rings, bearings, gaskets) I went with all aftermarket stuff because of the cost, we'll see how it goes. On Saturday I came home to my paint on the doorstep (finally) the Burnt Copper isn't exactly the color I had hoped for but it's close enough to where it should look alright. I just checked the tracking on the primer and clear (coming from a different place than the paint) and they should be there when I get home from school at 10pm tonight. I will take some pics next time i'm in the garage and actually have made progress and post them up.

On a side note: I am so freaking ready to graduate already I'm tired of having absolutely no time to do jack s*** other than work, study, eat and sleep.

What rings did you get? Who makes replacement rings for factory pistons? In the powersport world you usually can't fit aftermarket rings on factory pistons. I know the wiseco's wont work. Can't say Ive built the internals of a z32 yet so im jw.

I got Nippons but I've seen Beck/Arnley for the VG30 as-well. If I were looking for power I think I would've gone with CP pistons and Pauter rods but i'm only gonna be running the stock turbos so I figured OE spec parts shouldn't be detrimental.

UPDATES: Its been about a week and a half now since the last update, I've gotten everything together and started building. The crank is in and torqued down, spec-ed with Plastigage all of the mains are between .07 and .05 which is perfect. This past weekend I cleaned a few things and gave my pistons a bath to get most of the old carbon deposits and oil off, last night the rings went on and the pistons went into oil I want it to impregnate every little nook and cranny before I put it together so that I have an absolute zero dry start. I'll stop typing and let the pics do the talking, enjoy my update.

This update dedicated to Dan: sorry for your loss man, hope to see you with a build thread soon.

This is a mucho important piece for me something I spent a long time trying to get and something a lot of people sold out from under me here on nico and other places. Presenting:

UPDATE: Bottom end is fully speced and assembled, oil pan is drying from getting touched up, and I am currently waiting on a care package from courtesy nissan. here are some pics of the progress (sorry for the blurryness the camera has horrible focus.

Yes the oil pan was dented, I knocked it out where the pickup is and straightened out most of the damage, it should be good.

Thanks guys and HAHA VGPUMPKIN haha I like that, i actually chose the burnt copper metallic a long time ago, the valve covers and timing cover were painted that color the first time I dropped the engine in so after thinking about it I figured, why not go with that for the entire engine. plus my Z is sapphire blue so that and orange is win in my book. I am waiting on the care package from courtesey, as soon as that gets here i will be putting the heads on and then all the little stuff so hopefully during spring break i'll get it running.

With a black or beadblasted silver plenum, that would look sharp. Definitely will need some contrast to avoid being the VGPumpkin, lol. I'd keep the hoses black or silver too, as red or blue would just look weird, IMO. I do love the copper color though, especially with the sapphire blue.

Manifold and TBs are polished, timing cover is pumpkin, all visible hoses are wrapped with SS hose wrap, and all hose ends have anodized blue hose clamp covers.

This will give you a idea of what i'm talking about.

That's gonna look nice when it's done, that's for sure!

You're using protected fuel clamps on the fuel lines right? Not the regular worm gear clamps, which can cut into the hose, right?

Are you talking about the non-slotted screw clamps? the ones that have depressions in them? I huess i should use those to be safe.

UPDATE: Didnt have very much time to work on it today, I was helping my dad build a shed in the back yard but I did get the oil pan on, the pumpkin is coming together.
