I have owned a 2004 Murano since day one with no problems with CVT 75000 on it today. do have problem with oil leak under oil filter oil cooler and the drivers seat adjuster frame has snapped in the rear left corner. Dealer claims it has been a problem occasionaly but since I have 75K no warranty. Replacement cost is $700. This is metal fatigue problem.

I just joined after reading all the issues people have been having with the CVT tranny.

A long time ago I owned a ford tbird and after 15 years it started acting like what I hear some CVT's are doing. Gas it, engine revs but no go. Then bam, hit 7 G's and take off. I took my tbird to ford and they diagnosed faulty seals. That got "fixed" only to reoccur a week later. Some other diagnosis and lots of money later they got it fixed enough I could trade it off for something that worked.

The Murano CVT symptoms seem very similar to my tbird experience. Maybe it is just conincidence.

I am hoping mine Murano does not have this problem.

Cheers.

Comparing Nissan quality to Ford quality is like apples and oranges.

While there have been Nissan CVT problems (and we certainly read about them ALL on these forums) they happen to a miniscule number of MO owners. The vast majority of MO owners are perfectly happy with our cars - and CVT's.

Of course if I was among the tiny handful of people to have a CVT problem I'd feel differently. But as long as I continue to maintain my MO and drive it like the car it is designed to be (and not like a truck), I don't worry about my CVT.

We've updated the results for the Murano to include owner experiences through March 2009. In terms of successful repair trips per 100 cars per year:

2009: 39, better than average

2007: 40, better than average, marginal sample size

2006: 56, about average, small sample

2005: 29, better than average, small sample

2004: 82, about average, small sample

2003: 103, about average

A big thank you to this forum and everyone who has been helping. We'll have further updates in August and November. With more participants, we could provide more precise information and cover all model years.

2009 SL. About 10K miles so far.

Problems: 1. Front brakes beeded resurfacing of rotors and new pads at about 1K miles

2. Needed alignment at about 1K miles

3. Sunvisors bracket worked it way loose at about 5K miles.

4. Noticed tiny bubbles in all of the rear windows. I think this is a defect in the factory window tint. Notified Nissan USA, they sat that nobody else has complained about this.

Mileage is about 23MPG mixed using regular unleaded

You will always see a `lot of problems' on internet forums. In reality, only a miniscule number of Murano owners have had CVT problems - although that is little consolation for the few who have had them.

Because almost everyone who has a CVT problem reports it (sometimes over and over) on the Murano forums, it appears to be a larger problem than it really is. Nissan wouldn't have gradually phased out EVERY other transmission on both the Maxima and Altima in favor of the CVT if it was a `bad' transmission.

We have updated results for the Murano to include owner experiences through September 30, 2009. In terms of successful repair trips per 100 cars per year:

2009: 36

2007: 24

2006: 50

2005: 35

2004: 106

2003: 133

The 2003 and 2004 are about average, the others are better than average.

A few responses short of the minimum for all but the 2003 and 2009.

We've also introduced two new statistics, "Nada-odds" and "Lemon-odds," to indicate the percentage of cars with no repairs in the past year and those that required 3+ trips to the repair shop.

In the case of the 2009 Murano, the percentage with no repairs is about 71, and the percentage of lemons is about three. Not enough responses yet to provide these stats for other model years.

A big thanks to everyone who has been helping. We'll have further updates in February and May. With more participants, we could provide more precise information and the new stats for all model years.

Updated results soon. We barely got enough 2003s for a full result, and the 2004 ended up a single response short.

Even a few additional participants per year would be very helpful.

Just enhanced the related repair history survey so that it can (optionally) be used as a personal car maintenance record.

As always, more participants would be helpful. Updated Car Reliability Survey results in May, with a preview for participants in mid-April.

i have a 2009 murano le and have had problems with the engine since about 18000 miles. They could never figure it out until it was out of warranty. once I had to pay for it, they knew exactly what was wrong at a cost of over $350. Treated me very poorly when I tried to discuss the problem. Very disappointed

I am the unfortunate owner of a 09 Nissan Murano! I bought it for my wife in August 08 because she liked the look. This is the first and last Nissan this individual will ever own! At 70K the engine began to smoke but since the warranty had expired the dealership would not look at it without charging me. At 78k the thing was smoking like a coal burning freight train! I took it to the dealership where I bought it and smoked them out of the garage! The service manager provided me with a 1-800 number to Nissan and proceeded to take my vehicle apart. I was contacted by a Nissan rep, who told me she would contact the service manager to discuss repairing the vehicle. After a week with no return phone call from Nissan, I directed the SM to put my vehicle back together and I would pick it up. It was missing to the point of not having enough power to pull a incline by the dealership. They had pulled a injector wire out of the connector. Being gear head myself I am currently repairing this vehicle myself. I have a 98 Plymouth Breeze with 221K on it that burns no oil and has the original CV axles and get 30 mpg. Guess what is replacing this Murano?
