Thanks, guys! It is a good old truck. I've been taking some time to do the timing belt/tuneup. You know how it is…you start one thing and it leads to another and another! At the end of the summer the truck started running hotter than normal. I couldn't see anything out of the ordinary and the rad/ cooling system was flushed the summer before last. There were no leaks, so I thought maybe the waterpump was going as it has been in there since 2000, I think. Turns out that the radiator didn't have any fins left all around the shroud! So I now have a new rad, new waterpump, thermostat, hoses and belts ready to go in, probably over the weekend.
I also got around to scraping / washing off 20 years of oil spray out of the engine compartment (whew, what a job!) so it looks a lot better now. While I've got everything apart, I'm going to clean up the air cleaner base, the timing belt covers and assorted pieces and get them painted. It won't be perfect but it will look a lot better than surface rust. I figure that I can do sort of a rolling cleanup of the truck to keep it going strong and looking decent. It is really hard not to tear it down completely, like some of you folks do, and totally restore it. But I have other projects on the go that are ground up so I have to draw the line somewhere. Besides, I just like to drive my hardbody and I use it on a regular basis year round.
Hey Rev, how the repair of the deer damage coming on the green truck? Smurfmobile, any new stuff done on your trucks?
Regards, Gary

Deer damaged was fixed. I have have jest been driving and enjoying the truck since then. Right now she's in the garage under a cover waiting for Spring to finally arrive. Working on my '91 red truck right now. Trying to finish up a slow moving transmission swap.

Deerhurst: You posted a while back on Infamous that you have a HG41 axle.

Is that something you learned recently? Is that info not posted on your door jam?

Now that I've learned I can get the engine RPM down at cruise speed with an HG41 axle, I've been digging through door plate data trying to find out when these were put out there.

From what I can see, the HG series is the Limited Slip variety whereas the HF is the non-limited slip.

1996-1997 Automatic 2wd trucks came with 4.11 gears. LSD in a 2wd is still pretty rare in all years.

Those Frontier wheels look good on a red truck. Usually I don't like them but on red they look excellent. Thanks for posting!

Figured Id reply here too. I found the other placard in the engine bay a while ago and never updated in the registry. Info is not on the door jamb but in the engine bay. I feel that is a thing done on the early rigs. Havnt seen enough of them around here to confirm that or not.

I feel you are correct, the HG is LSD while the HF is open.

Mine is 86.5 4wd 5 speed with 4.11. He can probably pull a v-6 4.11 ring gear off and fit it on his current HD rear diff.

Thanks for the props on the wheels. I wanted the 16" cause easier to get tires and also a more aggressive look with a little more clearance. I also wanted to keep the factory look. So the X-terra wheels seemed to do the trick.

I plan to lower it 3", get new lower profile wheels & add a Cat-Back exhaust. I am in the process of replacing everything that normally goes bad in a 20 year old vehicle. I have already replaced: fuel pump & all rubber fuel hoses, brakes: including front calipers, master cylinder & stainless steel brake lines, alternator, water pump, radiator hoses, thermostat, stereo & speakers, front sway-bar & leaf spring bushings(Energy Suspension). I am dreading working on the front end bushings, steering & suspension.

Alright! Finally got a D21 of my own! Needs some TLC, paint work, but the interior is really good shape(except for a crack in the dash) and aside from the rear bumper there is no rust on the body or frame. Engine sounds great, transmission and transfer case shift smooth, the only thing mechanically wrong I can find is the U-joints on the rear drive shaft and the speedo cable doesn't quite work. Still gonna have my mechanic double check it for me. Just replaced both door latches so they can lock AND unlock. Need to replace the seals at the bottom of the crank windows, Then buff out the paint and repaint the roof of the cab. Overall I'm quite happy with it. Plan on adding a brush guard and some good lights, if I can't find a good mount on the stock bumper.

That is very interesting. Very rare too! I am curious, if you visit this truck again I would like to know some additional information.

If you have a micrometer can you measure the thickness of the torsion bars? Is it a one-piece or two-piece driveshaft? And does it have one or two piston calipers?

Hopefully you are able to visit that truck again sometime before it's crushed. Thanks so much for posting this!

I will do my darnedest to go back Monday for additional recon on this truck as well as it's 720 neighbor. No micrometer, but will find some way of measuring them, as well as verifying rear axle, driveshaft, caliper and mileage information. Would like to get interior trim because of the brushed aluminum accents.
Let me know if there's anything else you'd like for me to check on it.

Hi all, I've been a long-time lurker, but finally registered for an account yesterday...after 18 years without a D21, I finally bought another (brief story below)...

VIN: 1N6HD16YXSC306518
Year: 1995
Engine: VG30
Build Date: 09/94
Trim Level: SE-V6 King Cab
2wd/4wd: 4x4
Trans Code: RE4R01A
Axle Code: HG46
Exterior Color: KH3 Super Black
Interior Color: Gray
Exterior Factory Options: Chrome trim
Interior Factory Options: Just the standard SE Package, no additional options (no PW or PL)
Location: Atlanta, Georgia
Original Selling Dealer: Gandrud Nissan in Green Bay, WI; however, it was a dealer trade, so it originally shipped to Wilde Nissan in Waukesha, WI
Mileage: 118,792

I bought the truck yesterday (6/7/14) from the original owner, who was absolutlely meticulous about its care. He gave me a file that contained every (really, EVERY - even online purchases and parts shop purchases) receipt for the truck, and notes narrating what was performed and when. I am so pleased to have found this one, considering it was my dream truck when I was a high school senior in 1995 (and because my '88 4-cyl. 4x4 D21 was on it's last leg due to frame rot). So 19 years later (my '88 made it another year or so), I was finally able to pick up the cleanest one I could have possibly found!

Additional info on 1N6HD11S0GC393596:
Was told by one of the employees at the yard that this truck was an SE-I trim level. It has dual-piston calipers, a two-piece driveshaft, and what appears to be a 22mm front sway bar. Rear axle is an HG37, and it met its end at only 109,942 miles.
I was able to snap a few more pics of it today as well.
