I'm getting a Nikon D5100 in a few weeks and I've been reading/browsing this thread and others, I saw this pic and had a question.

Can taking a pic like this with so much light intensity ruin an image sensor? Would you need a UV filter or something? What about something as extreme as photographing the sun? I realize I have tons of reading to do, but sometimes articles don't cover such obvious stuff like this.

You are correct, in that you can damage the sensor. Not only that but think about your eyes.....That said having the sun in a shot is also a little different then zooming in on it. People have also said that lasers at concerts have destroyed their sensors when hit by a direct blast. So be careful. Tons of people shoot concerts with laser lighting every day without any ill effects.

Here is a shot I took the other day. First time doing headshots this one is straight from the camera.

^I did not know this. Does the ISO setting have any effect on the probability of damage? For example a low ISO is less likely to incur damage as opposed to a high risk high ISO? Or is it just exposure of the sensor to high intensity light period?

I doubt ISO would even matter, it's not something I lose sleep over.

Since the "photography challenge" threads have died and been buried how we just get a weekly subject. This week is people, next Friday I will come up with another one. Here is another shot from last weekends shoot.

My 14 year old son has taken many stunning pictures over the years - he started young, and is a way better photographer already than I ever was (at my current advanced age)! :)

I will post some of his very high-res pictures soon, perhaps with some from our trip to the Auto Shows we attended - his auto pictures are particularly amazing.

H took many pictures of the Infiniti Etherea for an article for me here at NICO too. I will post a link to those pictures shortly.

From the Etherea article ... click on it for the high-res picture (you may need to see/use the zoom buttons in the upper left corner of the zoomed' picture to get the full resolution).

Article is here - it contains other high-res images of the Etherea: http://www.nicoclub.com/archives/nicocl ... beach.html

You owe me lunch, Z. That's one FUGALICIOUS car. There are a thousand different things going on in that bodywork, but none of them do anything.

:chuckle: :lolling:
It isn't that bad actually! Target market is dense-urban city driving ... for next-generation kids who want a spacious, efficient, luxury car (it is a hybrid). Of course, I would not get the pink interior that this concept had, but other colors may look quite nice.

This looks too much like a friend of mine, where did you take this? Looks like a Tough Mudder or Warrior Dash event, and he is the type to do that kind of thing.

Tough mudder, that's one of my friends. Theme for the week is two wheeled transport.

Wow.

I have been wearing a hole through my carpet pacing waiting for my D5100 to show up from newegg. I get back home from working a night shift and unpack my box like a little kid on Christmas morning. I pick up the body and hear a rattle. I took off the body cap and the f*** mirror and another thin black piece fell out. They haven't imagined a rage face for this yet.

I didn't see anything actually broken, I think it is just glued on. Anyone hear of this happening? It was a refurb, but you would think someone would look for like, uh, pieces falling out before shipping it right out the door again.

So now I have the pleasure of waiting for this thing to make it back to CALIFORNIA even though it shipped from NJ, sit on a shelf for a week and a half before someone sends one back via a two cylinder delivery van that of course will be making stops in Yellow Knife, Canada and Chamula, Mexico before arriving at my house.

This is Karma, I'm paying for something aren't I?

^I would definitely rage. Its for reasons like this I never buy refurb and usually try to buy anything of this caliber in store in person. You can always bring listed prices with you and price match.

Hope it works out for you.

Thanks. I went with the refub because it would save me $100 on something I shouldn't be buying in the first place and I THOUGHT some human would actually have to pick the camera up and look at it. Not everything is perfect from the factory, I was hoping whatever happened to the camera originally would have been repaired and that would be it.

I did a lot of reading and was a bit scared by stories of the shutter failing and bad image sensors. I really kind of figured that someone else had gone through the hassle of getting the 1 in 1000 camera that was defective and got it repaired.

Next time check out B&H Photo. They actually rate their refurbs on a scale of 1 to 10 so you kind of know what kind of abuse their product has/has not been through.
