Newbie to the Versa...

Tomorrow I go to the dealership to pick up my 2008 Versa SL! I have a few comments and questions concerning my purchase. My personal preference is a manual transmission and my dealer had a HUGE ordeal finding a 6 speed manual. Every car on the lot was a CVT. I've heard great things about the CVT but I have to have a manual. The dealership searched high and low for a 6 speed manual with all of the options I wanted (sunroof and 6 speed). It took 15 dealerships and one week to finally locate a 2008 Versa SL with a six speed manual but there was a problem. The car they found has the sport package. I didn't want to pay the extra money for the sport package. The dealership was so frustrated they wound up giving me the sport package for free! Is the 6 speed manual that hard to come by? Is it that popular or is there something I'm missing here? Is the 6 speed manual crap? It's hard to find a fully loaded manual. Most people who buy fully loaded cars are also lazy and want automatic transmissions.

Sadly, most Americans these days want automatics anyway... it's getting harder and harder to find manual transmission cars of ANY kid.

I wanted a 6-Speed, but I also wanted to test drive a 6speed before I paid for one. And that wasnt going to happen. I had to pay for it, before they would order it. So I took the auto.

my dealership had standards, but they were just the S package, I had to order my car from the factory and wait 2 months for it to get here ( Blue SL with tech package). I did not mind, I liked the fact that no one else test drove the car. it only had 34km's on the clock when I picked it up

Nissan manual trannies for FWD applications aren't known for their "feel". I remember the other Nissan V... the sentra spec v forums saying it felt like stirring gravel on cold mornings. Synthetic transmission fluid (royal purple, redline) mitigated a lot of the symptoms. That said, the only problem I have with the v's 6spd is the 1-2 gear change grrrind and its reluctance to pop back into 1st gear driving in residential roads w/ stop signs.

There are 2 Nissan dealers close to me, neither one had any manuals. (A 3rd, farther away dealer tried to tell me that NIssan didn't MAKE a manual...needless to say I didn't go there) Actually neither dealer even had a "S" model. I ended up having to have the car I bought (08, 6-speed S with no options!) sent from 300 miles away. Both dealers really wanted me to just take what they had on hand, but where I ended up the salesman was willing to look around to find one I liked.

I really only wanted the 6 speed SL with a sunroof but Nissan made it a little difficult to get just that. I had to get the upgraded stereo package with the sunroof package and I have yet to see a SL w/o the convenience package after already having the stereo and sunroof package. I went ahead and got the ABS package because it was only $250 and it was going to save me 20% on my insurance. After all of that the car on the lot with all of those options also had a CVT. I test drove the CVT but I just knew I wasn't going to be happy with it. It wasn't because it was a CVT but because it was an automatic...I just have to have a manual transmission.

Pretty ridiculous attitude, really: we have what we have and what we have is what you want even if you don't want it; we know better".

Gets back to my purchase: there is a dealer a two minute drive down the street (if the lights are against me, three minutes) and two others in town; I wound up driving an hour out of town because the salesperson talked to me as if I were a person and not a commodity.

I happen to get lucky that I was Looking for just an S model 6spd, but then realized it couldn't come with cruise control (07 model). But right beside the S was the same color almost fully loaded SL with 6spd. I had them check to find a less optioned SL 6spd and there was not another SL 6spd in the whole state at the time, so I got it.

I just picked up my new car and WOW!! I am HIGHLY impressed. I had a 07 Honda Fit before I bought this car and thought the two cars were pretty much the same but not now. The Versa is obviously on a whole different level and well above the Fit. I will admit the 6 speed is a little "clicky" when compared to the 5 speed in my Fit but it was a difference not even worth a second thought. I really love the Versa...I have a feeling this will be a long wonderful relationship!! The Fit just pissed me off and I'm glad to see it go.
