New starter?

The starter on my 91 q45 is making a bearing noise sound when it starts..like the sound of bad idler pulleys..a mechanic friend of mine said it sounded like the bendix was hanging instead of being released at start. Can the bendix on the starter be repaired or do I have to replace the whole starter? I am not even sure if the bendix is part of the starter or not..Please advise..thanks, George.
