Hey guys, just picked up an '85 720 KC on Saturday. Got it from a guy who had left it sitting for a year when it started hesitating/sputtering on him. All I needed to do to get her fired up was a fresh battery and some ether.

Still has the hesitation and that became very apparent trying to get it somewhere to work on it as it sputtered out once I hit 55 shortly after getting on the highway. Anything above 5% throttle would start the symptoms and obviously, without more throttle input than that it's hard to maintain any speed. Anyway, eventually reached my destination with a bit of bump drafting from my tail who followed me the whole way.

Obviously I plan on replacing fuel filters and double checking the carb settings. There should be two fuel filters, one in-line between the tank and pump and then one in the carb, correct? Hell of a lotta vacuum lines that could possibly be a culprit. :ohno: I'm more used to FI systems, haha.

I think I'll need to get at the heater core at some point as there was a slight coolant leak in the cab.

Anyway, been reading up on these 720s all weekend and figured I'd pop in and post up a thread.

Soon as I remember to take some. Got it to my Dad's house and went straight into the shed to put it on jack stands and pull the wheels. Probably do some work on it this weekend.

Well, it isn't much to look at as it sits now and by the time I got the heater core done, oil changed, and wheels back on it was dark out but here are three that I took a moment to snap just for you guys.

Now I need some help... got the basic stuff I wanted to get done, done. New front shocks, new fuel filter, new heater core and t-stat, fresh coolant, fresh oil and new filter, new wipers, and rear view re-glued. I tried to take her for a test run around the block and barely even got down the road with the way it was running. Actually needed to push it back up the street as it would not make it under it's own power.

This is the reason the previous owner ended up parking it. It seems to run/rev alright in neutral but under load it falls on its face and seems fuel starved. And apparently the choke is not functioning correctly. As I said, by the time I got the wheels back on it was dark out so I ran out of time to mess around with it today but I plan on hooking up a fuel pressure gauge just to check that it's getting the... 3(?) psi. Also, while doing the fuel filter, as I understood it, the fuel pump should also have a filter but the pump on my truck did not seem to have a filter... it didn't even appear you could disassemble it.

I need to check into the wiring for the pump as well because it's getting power from a homerun from the fuse box instead of the wiring harness.

Fixed the fuel issue, the pump that was on it barely ran and couldn't keep the float bowl supplied under load. New Delphi pump and she runs like a champ. Carb still has a few hiccups such as the choke not working correctly (I haven't actually checked to see if its working at all, I just know it won't start cold and stay running, I just feather the throttle for a bit after a cold start) and sometimes it gets stuck in fast idle after being driven for some time. Kind of annoying when I come to a stop and it's stuck in fast idle because it's currently missing half the exhaust.

Anyway, been driving it all week to make sure it's ready for inspection and once I get the exhaust finished I'll be trying. Hopefully they don't hassle me too bad about the cab mounts.

Nice. I need to go work on my s13 so I can it inspected.

Are you sure your throttle plate is closing back all the way? Mine has an extra spring to help return the throttle. At first it was heavy, now I don't notice.
