there are some that are very high priced but if you look around on the sites you will find some that are very cost efficient4WOFURY wrote:Thanks.. Looking at the sites now.
I think they are supposed to make it up in build quality and what not, not necessarily just specs.4WOFURY wrote:I was looking at the ThinkPads website and didn't see anything that impressed me. Barely more memory than my 7 year old computer, slower, less ram. Yes, it's a laptop, but I've seen HPs with a twice the HD, more ram, better graphics, and a few more perks go for the same price. That was also a year ago though.
Cant you get linux free? I would way rather it come with the more expensive OS...rather then having to learn something new, then have to buy windows if I don't want it. If its comes with windows you can just add linux.CodeRed wrote:ASUS EEE P900
All I need to say is that it comes pre-loaded with linux.
Yes, thats a Sony PSP
lol, I'm at least not COMPLETELY ignorant on the subject. I know at least that it has a GUI (Hey now, whats wrong with dos? I <3 dir /p ...)CodeRed wrote:Windows XP is good at best. MAC completely blows. Linux=pwnyes, its free because it is an open source operating system. Buying the name brand OS isn't the best in my book. And Linux isn't probably what you think of it as. It is not MS DOS, it actually has a graphics interface that is similar to both windows and MAC. And each version of Linux differers from the next. On this machine I have Mandriva Linux because I found it easier to set up the wireless card for it, I use to run UBuntU (which I think is much better). Also they do make a version of Windows for that particular PC.

You'll be impressed with the build quality. Slightly less specs, but they are freaking tanks. I had two HPs prior to my Thinkpad; will never buy a HP over a Thinkpad in the future, even if I have to sacrifice some of the specs.4WOFURY wrote:I was looking at the ThinkPads website and didn't see anything that impressed me. Dell is one of the few manufactures where you can still order XP sp2. You can customize your laptop with Dell customer service. Short version: I need a new desktop replacement laptop.
Long version:
I used to be a computer nerd, but haven't taken any classes in a couple of years (the good teacher they had left for a higher paying job, and the computer teacher now is a complete tard.. he also drives a SRT-4, which he insists on redlining every time I've ever seen him..). I still am pretty tech inclined, but I've fallen behind on companies.
The computer I have right now is a Sony desktop paperweight. 7 Years old, 60GB hard drive, 2GB ram, and 256 MB graphics card. The ram and graphics card I've put in separate over the years.
I'm looking for a desktop replacement laptop (going to give this one to my cousin, minus the hard drive.. going to have fun with that.. and some fireworks.. and a hammer..), for school, internet browsing, gaming (mind you, not extreme surround sound, feel-like-i'm-in-the-game, but something fun.. used to play EverQuest lol), and car diagnostics (something like blazt).
Right now I have 1k set aside. I can go a bit higher (read: 500 or so higher), but I don't need an alienware or something lol. I'm looking for something that isn't going to be shadowed by tomorrow, but I don't need something top-of-the-line either.
I've thought maybe vaio or a dell.. but now I'm asking for suggestions!
Thanks for your time!
What is the point of a tiny laptop with 20GB of solid-state memory? I'd rather have a Palm or Pocket PC than one of those.CodeRed wrote:ASUS EEE P900

Well, screen-size maybe? That Asus would be great to do business travel with - lightweight and yet allows the ability to work on documents and spreadsheets, etc.MinisterofDOOM wrote:What is the point of a tiny laptop with 20GB of solid-state memory? He is looking to spend $1k, and willing to go to $1.5K on a desktop replacement that will handle gaming....PoorManQ45 wrote:BestBuy just had a deal on the Acer Aspire One. $250 plus tax.
It was on slickdeals. May still be alive.
