I've always wanted a 300z just not this year. But I gotta say this car is fun to drive and for being 20 years old she's got some life in her. I'll post pics of this car tomorrow it's not in the greatest in shape, but she runs solid besides a rattle in the muffler and a ticking sound under the hood. I've own'd it for about 2 weeks now.

Here's my question to you guys. I want to do some basic things that would increase the torque get rid of the rattling sound and a good place where I could purchase some body kits for this classic. I bought this car for 800 bucks and she's gonna be my lil project I'm going to take on... thing is I really dont know that much about cars *in detail* so if you could point me out to some good guides, books, how to's, what tools are a must have ect. I'd much appreciate it.

first things first is a new paint job...

Welcome to the forums. For mostly every car modding starts with CAI, Exhaust and goes on from there. Bolt On modifications mostly. Do yourself a hugeeee favor and track down a hanes or chilton manual for ur car. Its a mechanics guide but more than that it goes into depth on how mostly any part of ur car works and its not really technical so it makes understanding it easy. Post some pics when you have a chance, we always love to see new cars.

Forget the paint, get the maintenance done so the car runs the way it should...Go fast parts next, and then the paint

Just playing with ya, its ur car...Do whatever makes you happy, and welcome again

you should post in the Z31 forum, the 1987 model falls in that catagory.

the Z32 forum is 1990-1996 year models.

the folks on the Z31 forum have the knowledge and insight specific to your car.

Welcom to nico and the nissan z family

Thanks for the great welcome guys, I do own a Haynes Automotive Repair Manual thanks to the previous owner... 300zxPrdigy, you gotta point on the maintenance first I just wanted to look good, but I think the money invested should start on the inside then work its way out. Not familiar with the abbreviation CAI, but if I was to guess something with the ignition? I'll post pics tomorrow was going to, but got out of work late today and I'll move this to the proper thread. And thanks again for the great welcome I got a feeling I'm going to be talking to you guys a lot haha.

CAI= Cold Air Induction, but all 75-96 Z cars are already cold air, btu can still benefit form a cone air filter

Is that ticking sound coming from the top end of the engine? If so, try putting in some thicker oil when you do your tune up. If the sound quiets down or goes away, congrats you've got lifter tick. It's not something serious, but worth addressing if you have the motor apart.

Is it an NA or a turbocharged version? If NA, the cheaper way to get power is to convert to turbo. If you have a turbo, an intercooler and turning up the boost would do well for a while. Exhaust is pretty much a must for a turbo car, but reguardless of what's in the engine you have you will want to address the suspension before you do much more than that.

As for tools, you will want a set of open end wrenches, sizes 8mm to 14mm minimum. Probably will want a ratcheting socket wrench as well, and a torque wrench. I will assume that you have various screwdrivers around the house. Download this:http://xenonz31.com/files/1987%20FSM.zip

As for body kits...http://az-zbum.com/information.body.kits.shtml

If you don't know when the timing belt was last changed, you will want to do that ASAP. And when you change it; the accessory belts, the tensioner, CHTS, CHTS subharness, and thermostat might as well be changed. The cam seals and front crank seal should be replaced if they are leaking as well. After that is done, then you can worry about paint.
