Putting that in an exhaust system is simply a band-aid for poor design. You CAN have a free-flowing system that makes good power and sounds great. We've proven it. :dblthumb:
Matina210 wrote:this crackling sound... It really meant that there was turbulence in the pipe, but I liked the sound as long as it wasn’t too harsh.
It's not "turbulence".

That crackling / popping is caused by the lean condition brought on by deceleration. When you lift, the throttle plate closes off incoming air and your ECU returns to a leaner mixture. However, you're still moving, which keeps the engine spinning, at an rpm that normally would want more air (and fuel) than your closed throttle plate (and turned-almost-off injectors) can provide. The popping occurs when sufficient fuel builds up in the chamber to "fire" that cylinder on the exhaust stroke of the engine.

Easier to show on a carb'ed car. Not harmful, and I agree - sounds way cool. Has ZERO to do with "turbulence".

Wanna confirm? Next time you're driving, press the clutch in on decel - It won't pop / crackle like it does with the clutch disengaged.
Matina210 wrote:...showed a gain of 2 hp, and 5 lb-ft.
...all well within the variability of a dyno. One pull means nothing.
I see the link for the silencer photo goes to FlowMaster, a prime example of engineering fail. :facepalm2 Their mufflers make the exhaust turn at sharp angles, usually with zero radius.
My HKS silencer didn't look quite like that, and if 2hp and 5 lb-ft are within the variability of a dyno, then you're saying the dyno didn't prove it was restricting my exhaust. Having seen my results, I was agreeing with you that it did.

Unfortunately, I can't confirm anything about the crackling noise. I will say your explanation is much more technical than the people who told me for years my car was "backfiring", when I knew darn well that it wasn't. My S14 that made the noise was totalled in 2008, and sold to a body shop in 2009. (May her new home be a good one.) My new exhaust on the S13 doesn't make that noise, but it's loud. I think I'll have to go down to a 2" pipe. I thought it would be quieter than the S14, but the S14 didn't have a header.

I remember reading many years ago that the Hotshot header and A'PEXi N1 Dual exhaust made an ungodly loud combination, but it makes sense that any header makes your system louder.

So, for those reading this thread and trying to decide on a pipe size: Keep in mind that the header makes a difference in the noise level.
With a pipe size that narrows down to 2.25", my exhaust is so loud it made my brother-in-law complain, and he likes loud cars. He said it was making him naseous, and I asked, "You mean it's not giving you a headache?" So he said, "That, too."
It's a shame because it sounds so menacing at idle, and I don't know if a 2" exhaust will have the same rumble. Well, the 2.0" exhaust can still have a 22" resonator...

Well-said.

Here's what I can tell you: We've sold over a thousand S-chassis systems. Most of the time, people ask me for a recommendation (after they tell me what they want to accomplish and what their plans are for the car). I have never, ever, had someone come back and complain that I steered them the wrong way.

For your needs, a 2.5" system with a 22" resonator and dual tips is THE way to go. Any time you make a change to an already well-engineered system, you throw the entire thing off. Kinda like putting a high-lift cam in an engine that was designed to rev to 12K rpms - Everything has to work together.

That's one of the reasons I really try not to sell our systems without a muffler, or without a resonator. Some people want to add their ebay muffler or their cherry bomb or their super-JDM angled fartcannon. That's fine, but it won't work the way it was engineered to work, and don't tell anyone it's a BRM Exhaust. :)

When you're ready to "do it right", hit me up. I'll make you a special deal JUST to make a believer out of you. That's all I can do, and I think it's the right way to do business. :)

SEXY!!!

I really love our dual-tip setup. Something people don't know about it: The tips are about $50 each if you try to buy them separately and individually. We charge $30 for BOTH! That includes welding them onto the muffler as well - it's a smmmoooookin' deal! :)

Wish I knew about this when I was exhaust shopping :gapteeth Oh well its sold and gone. But, I do have a Civic that needs pretty much an entire exhaust from engine to bumper because its all welded as one giant leaky, burnt gas smelling piece with no cat....

I'm finally swapping out my tired out KA for a SR in about two weeks :D I'm going to do these one shot: "Wiring Specialties" harness (which are beautifully made), dual core radiator with electric fans and shroud and a stainless steel 2.5" diameter/22" resonator/dual tip BRM exhaust! ;]
NICO has definitely shown me the way for a somewhat proper OEM/performance build.
I said I was going to get one of these a while back but i'm finally doing it now!

Any deals or offers?

I got my exhaust in a few days ago.. man that thing is just beautiful. The dual tips look beefy as hell!
I'm getting my swap done this weekend, once it's finished I'll most definitely be posting a video!

By the way, customer service: 10/10 :D

Just ordered one for my 92 SE. I tried reading this entire thread first but I only made it around page 15 before I couldnt wait anymore!! My current (stock) exhaust is rusted out at the cat and is cut off a lil after the driver seat so this car is past due for a new exhaust. Anyone happen to know right off hand approx how many rubber hangers I will need? Im just going to order them now so I dont have to worry about them later.

I have had my 2.5" BRM exhaust on my s14 240 since 2009 and have absolutely LOVED it since the day I installed it. I've had plenty of compliments on the sound, which is amazing and the quality is top notch. It has held up quite nicely despite it's four years of service and the abuse I have put my car through.

Now the time has come for me to say goodbye to the KA and hello RB, and with it I will be retiring my 2.5" for a 3" exhaust. It's a shame there isn't a discount for return customers because this build is quickly getting expensive! :ohno:

I was wondering, is emailing you still the best way to order? My RB shipped out today so I should probably stop procrastinating and get things ordered.

I think I got one of the original runs of the BRM exhaust way back in ....good lord when was it, 2005 ?
Anyways, I'll take a few pictures of it and post it up here in a few days.

It needs a little polishing but sounds just as sweet as it did when I got it.

** I must tell the truth though, I too wanted an exhaust with a JDM bend. A part of me still does, but I'm happy that I went with Greg's suggestion and his adamant stance that he would not provide that.
All these years later, I'm a bit older and would look utterly stupid with a JDM bended exhaust sticking out behind the car.

As promised, here are the pictures of the exhaust system.

First got the BRm system April 2005

The factory exhaust hangers were really worn so the system hung low and would move around while driving.
They were eventually replaced with polyurethane versions.

Image

Fast forward 8 years, daily driver in Maryland even through the winter + never been cleaned and you get this.

The muffler was in the same shape as the resonator until my neighbor brought me some 00 steel wool and Glass Cleaner.

Image

Those rust spots were once shiny "splatter" from the welding process. (At least I think so, I'm not a welder)

Image

The sections that were exposed to the most heat have changed over the years but is still in good shape.

If I were to do this again, I would treat the steel exhaust hangers and the steel flanges with some kind of rust prevention + High temp paint.

Hi I was wondering what would be the best setup for a stock KA24DE? I want the sound to be quiet not loud, I also want it to have the nice deep sound? Any suggestions will be helpful. :)

I was thinking of this setup. 18" resonator 2.5" tubing diameter.

The links on the top of the BRM site will help with selecting a system, but that's a pretty good start right there!

The 22" resonator is a little quieter and has a little deeper tone. :dblthumb:
