hey everybody,
im excited to be back into cars, i used to have an S14a with a blacktop S14 SR20 in it, but i sold it when i started college because i didnt have the time or money to go to the racetrack anymore. since then ive gotten into motorcycles, cafe racers and bobbers to be exact. but i just picked up a datsun 620 to get around town in, its the coolest little truck! i drove it home (2 hour drive) and everything seems to work well.
i've got a list of things to do to it, like re-upholster the bench seat, paint it, powdercoat the wheels, ect. but before i start making it nice looking, i want to fix a few small mechanical issues before they presist and get worse. i was hoping you guys could help me out

it starts up pretty easily usually, but a couple times when ive tried to start it, ill turn the key and it sounds like the starter is spinning but not catching... or something like that. it sounds like grinding metal ill let it sit for a second, then it works fine. do i need to replace the starter soon? whats going on there?

heres the new 620 i just got:

I'll see if it is on our list. If not, I'll see if I can get one. We have a connection or two ;)

sweet! thanks a bunch, thats going to be really helpful!

so the starter has been working ok, but now when it starts, once it turns over, it kind of grinds for just a second, then it runs normally. im thinking it could either be that its not getting oil right away, or maybe the starter is just messed up.

any advice? what can i check to narrow down what it could be? im going to hang out with a friend of mine who is very car-knowledgeable tomorrow, hopefully he can help me out. ill probably end up researching it more tonight

also, today i picked up some 2" lowering blocks and also decided on a paint color!
im going with Infiniti Beryllium Metallic. its a darker brown that looks pretty neat. i might put some gold pearl in it too, i guess i havent figured out the specifics with that yet.

hopefully ill be painting it in the next week or so. i need to figure out a cheap way to coat the bed and wheelwells with rhino-lining first!

You can remove the starter and take it to AutoZone (or similar) and have it tested for free. If it's bad, you're in the right place. A starter at AutoZone is $35 with a $15 core and a lifetime warranty.

+1 on the paint color. That's an awesome color and it will look amazing. What color are you thinking for the interior?

FWIW, I'd ask whoever you are going to get to paint the truck if they would do the bedliner for you as well. That stuff is a PITA to work with.

i was planning on doing the painting myself.
and i found this, it doesnt seem too complicated to apply.

i figured i would paint the interior (a pillars, doors frames) gloss black, then black suede on the dash
this VW kid makes re-wrapping dashes look easy, i have some sewing machine experience, so i'll give it a try.

i'm planning on doing the dash, door panels, and headliner in suede. then dyeing the glovebox door, gauge bezel, steering wheel, etc, with SEM vinyl dye. theyll be flat black

That doesn't seem too bad at all.

The black will look good with the beryllium. Greg said an interior about the color of a baseball glove would be cool too. Just throwing it out there. I need to find something I can paint that color
