Hey guys I just bought a new to me 1985 720 4x4 pickup and have some questions for the experts here.

First off there is no owners manual for the truck and the legend on the 4wd selector is missing so I need to know what position it should be in for 2wd cruising to get it home. Also I searched but I didn't see anyone that had scanned an owners manual into PDF form, has anyone done this or should I just buy one off ebay?

Second is, if the 4wd was engaged how do you get the automatic lockers up front to unlock?

I think that's all I have for right now. I know I'll be back asking where you guys get your parts from as it's missing the tailgate and all the plastic light housings on the outside will need to be replaced as they are cracked or completely broken.

Thanks,
Aaron

congrats on your new toy, these little trucks rock :)

you'll have a better chance geting info on line, or just invest in a good chilton (on or off line) the standard owners manual doest have much in it, most important things can be found here as well.

to disengage auto lockers drive backwards a ways then forwards. all the way down is 2h

Using a 1984 owners manual it looks like that year used a handle between the seats that shifts up/down rather than the later trucks that have what looks like a regular manual shift lever next to the transmission shifter. If you have the up/down shifter you will want to push the shifter down all the way to the floor to get 2wd.

Yeah the lever is in between the seats so now I won't have to worry about driving home in 4wd mode, thanks for the info. I just ordered a FSM for the truck today so I don't have to guess at how to take the front axles off as the outer CV boots need to be replaced, do ya'll know a good place to get replacement axles in case the CV joints are damaged?

I'm really exited I get to pick the truck up tomorrow, I've kinda always wanted one of these trucks since I had a Stomper 4x4 version of this truck as a kid.

I'll get some pics posted up once I get it home tomorrow.

That's funny, I had a 720 Stomper when I was a kid and even more funny,I found one at a toy show and bought it up so now I own one again.

Best place to get replacement axles would be www.rockauto.com.

So I got the truck home today :dance It's definitely going to need some work, but I'll get it sorted out. I didn't want to get it on the interstate yet so I just took back roads never getting above 55. It's got a nice vibration at around 40mph then faded away once I got to 50. It also has a pretty decent wallow in the front end, you can turn the wheel, wait.. then the truck turns, any mid corner adjustments or bumps send the front end wallowing around, so it' probably needs ball joints and assorted other suspension bushings and joints.

On to the pictures of the $1800 buy.

Some body damage here along with needing new corner lenses.

Drivers seat is pretty worn out, I'm going to try and find some seats from a late model Frontier to replace these with

Need to get a new rear window clasp

I have no clue whats going on here. This whole exhaust has gotta come out as it's leaking like a sieve and who uses RTV as an exhaust gasket

Leaky steering gear, not sure how I'll proceed here, maybe a rebuilt unit or might try new seals.

Truck is dirty all over, definitely saw a lot of offroad or at least muddy roads

Outer CV boots are no where to be seen. I'm not hearing popping from them though so they may be salvageable with new boots and grease, we will see if the balls are scored or nicked.

Minor oil leak around the pan. That's going to a PIA to fix I'm guessing. Oh well.

Saw you on Ratsun but I like posting here more.

IDK where you live so I won't really comment on price.

Looks like you have a mini overhaul bout to happen. Just take it a little at a time and try to be consistent and not letting minor problems get out of hand. But the manual is pretty good for basic breakdown of procedure but is sometimes unclear about details.

Couple of guys on here have put up some killer info so check the sitckies.

Yeah I figured I'd hit up both sites. I used to post here a long time ago when I had my 88 Maxima and 91 240SX. This truck is definitely not going to be a daily driver so i'm taking my time with getting it back in shape. The price is what it is, like I said over at Ratsun 4x4's around here command a premium so I don't think i could have done much better.

Looks like an excellent project. Welcome back to NICO where you belong! In the end it doesn't matter what we pay for our toys as long as we love them.
