Negotiating lease buyout

Anyone have any experience buying their lease?

I have an 07 lease that ends in 4 months. I will need another vehicle but will be looking to get something used since I need to lower my payment quite a bit (student loan payment going up big time). I also do not want to lease again.

But if I am going to buy used I would be happy just buying the car since I know it has been treated well. It will be under the 39K I am allowed too. I love the car. The only thing that worried me was the cvt trans but I just got my warranty upgrade notice yesterday.

However, the buyout price is a little higher than I could afford if I financed it, and definitely more than the car will be worth. Another issue I would face is that sometime next year it will probably need new tires and front brakes. So that is an additional expense.

Has anyone ever been able to negotiate the buyout? From reading other posts I was not able to find someone that actually did it. Are the dealers at all desperate these days? I mean, I could probably find another used car on their lot, and pay less, but I am risking the car history.
