so I have been working on getting my car back to factory condition. Ive replaced the trans, done all the usual tune ups, 120k timing kit. valve gaskets new IAC, etc.

It was able to Idle fine in Park, but sputtered out quickly when put in gear.

sadly right after putting another IAC on, when I started it, I heard a light knocking sound from the engine. it is a steady knock that goes with the engine rpms.

I have no Idea of the actual cause, but I am leaning toward it being a valve stuck open.

If this is the case, how much is involved with replacing it.

These are interference engines, so if you didn't have everything lined up exactly correctly when you reassembled for the 120k, then you will have a valve striking a piston. You're looking at pulling the affected head and at very minimum replacing the valve, as long as no damage was done to the piston, rod or valve seat.

the engine ran perfectly for a few months after the timing kit. just had problems with the Idle speed. after changing the IAC the knock came out of nowhere. very slight knock so it makes me think its just an open valve.

HLA, they can be a bit finicky, and you get a valve clatter that can sound like a knock. they are rebuildable or replaceable, but it's an all day job, and once you're that deep you'll be able to see if a valve is in fact stuck open, which would mean pulling the heads.

thanks. I figured it was a stuck open lifter.

Technically it wouldn't be a stuck open lifter, it would be a collapsed lifter. They operate on the function of compressing oil through a small orifice, cushioning the rotation of the camshaft. They click when they have collapsed due to either debris getting stuck in the orifice, or air bubbles getting into the lifter itself. An old wives' fix would be to replace half a quart of oil with auto trans fluid, but that's not a guarantee and you don't wanna run it for a long time like that. That can dilute down enough to clear the blockage if that is the issue.
