Hey guys, wondering if people have come across the issues im having.
Vh45 Q45 with a 300zx NA 5 speed. Trans was basically dry when I put everything in, did one test start to make sure the clutch is doing what it needs to be. 1st gear engaged no noise or issues.
Filled trans with Redline MT90 and was going to drop it on the ground and finally drive. I put it in first on the jack stands and Im hearing a VERY SKETCHY " chug chug chug chug" from inside the trans or the bellhousing. Oddly i didnt hear any noise when the transmission was dry. It almost seems like its not going fully into gear or something. New to the 300zx trans so not sure what type of problems exist on these.

So I just got done pulling the shift linkage out to put it into 1st by hand to make sure the shortened link isnt the problem. What im finding is that its acting that its not going fully into gear. Also in Neutral i can faintly hear the noise. It sounds like its one "THUNK" per rotation. Not a grinding but more of a THUNK THUNK THUNK THUNK.

You have a very limited time when you can edit post.
Was it a TT or NA trans? Was the flywheel NA or TT? Was the throwout bearing new? Did you remove the spacer for the torque converter and install a pilot bearing?
On the shift linkage did install the shifter bracket form a z32 or did you make your own? The linkage has to be a specific height otherwise it will not go into gear correctly. Why so many people have issues with short shifters and z32's.
Now when it comes to a thunk sound, does it make a difference when the clutch is pushed vs when its out? Are you absolutely sure its not coming from the driveshaft. Is it a one piece or 2 piece, stock or aftermarket? New or new to you?
It is very possible the flywheel could be hitting the bell housing. The pilot bearing was not installed and causing the input shaft to move. The clutch could not be aligned properly with the vh adapter causing it to rub and it is only noticeable because of the torque difference. It is very possible the input bearing could have been damaged because you started it dry, not likely but a possibility.
That is about it inside the bell housing. Z32 trans are just like any other trans, bearings go, synchro's start to grind etc... But if the noise is distincly inside the bell housing, make sure flywheel, clutch, pilot bearing, adapter are all aligned up.

NA Trans with NA flywheel and NA Clutch. Pulled the old bearing from the vh and inserted the new one that came with the comp clutch, new throw out as well.
I shortened the stock linkage But I removed it to make sure it wasnt that limiting the movement of the selector.
Clutch in no sound, clutch out in N and i feel like i hear a slight noise but the motor and exhaust are really loud. 1st gear it does it but second gear it is terrible.
1 piece shaft but pulled that out to eliminate the possibility.
you can FEEL it in the shifter. Ive personally never yanked apart a trans but I will be. Just got the motor/trans situated to pull it after work tomorrow. Im thinking one of the shift forks maybe took a dump and there is a chunk chilling in there.
Yanked it all apart and everything looks solid with exception of a few teef missing on first gear, Did find the teeth but did find one small shard of something and im thinking that was my problem. Either way I have another trans to put in so im not too worried.

The "gold" part that is missing the couple teeth are synchros. That should not have caused the vibration or noise you posted, that just makes it harder to get in gear. Unless those teeth got lodged somewhere that may cause the issue, like in between gears, bearings, etc.
I believe it is call the dog gear that is missing the teeth. The syncro gear (brass) actually looks in really good shape.
Im thinking maybe the one tiny chunk I found got swept up into the fluid once I filled it and must of worked its way into maybe the selector or something. Idk. Im gonna put that trans back together and just keep it around for parts and ill use this other one, cross my fingers and hope for the best. It came out of a car with rod knock and supposedly trans had 0 problems
