my CA18 is upside down on a stand with no oil pan, crank girdle and the oil pump bolts / bolts by the rear main are out. my motor was from an auto with 60k miles, how well off do you guys think i'll be if I just get standard main and rod bearings, and put everything back together with plastigauge? Time and $$ is an issue so i'd like to avoid taking it to a machine shop and getting it checked out but I do want to do things the right way.

on a side note, I know that certain parts belong to certain cylinders, but to what extent?? I put all my crank girdle bolts in one bag, and while I know which two connecting rod bolts belong to which cylinder i have no idea which is on the left and which is on the right. Also, i know which connecting rod cap belongs to which cylinder but dont recall which way they were facing. Am i f*cked because i forgot to record this stuff or what?? any tips on what i should pay attention to from here on out so this doesnt happen again?

Ok raise your right hand and put left on the service manual, repeat after me.

"I am a dumbass. I didn't keep track of what I was doing and I now find myself neck deep. I solemnly swear not to do that igmanent stuff no mo"

Plastigage will work, it's not NHRA level gear but if you take your time you should be fine. The problem is you have to have several size bearing shells ready to adjust if the clearance turns out to be wrong. Take the crank to a machine shop and ask the guy to "mike" the rod and main journals and give you the numbers. Armed with this you can get the right sized bearings on the first try. Of course check the clearance to be sure. Do you need the reccomended numbers from the Nissan FSM?

Are there cylinder numbers stamped on the big ends of the rods? If so the numbers on the cap and rod should be on the same side.

Mixing up the main bolts should not be a problem, just be sure to clean the parts real good and chase the bolt holes in the block with a tap to make sure they are free of crap.
