To make a long story short a rebuilt engine developed into a cracked block within a month of driving. After waiting 6 months for the small time mechanic to repair his screw up I find that he has not yet purchased the replacement engine and all he has done with the old engine is pull the intake off. Lawsuit pending.................What I need to know is does anybody have an experiance or recomendation reguarding buying an engine from one of these shops on the net?..............they make claims that they are shipped from Japan and they have no more than 40 to 60k miles on them, (they wouldn't have US Emissions on them would they?)..............they say that the engines are tested and have a 3 to 6 month, unlimited mileage warranty. What kind of compression numbers should one expect? It seems to good to be true that they would be selling 10 to 12 year old engines with that low of miles.......on top of that there must be a dozen different companies offering about the same condition engine for about the same amout of coin ( $1300 - $1700 ). I just don' t want to get burned again .........Any advice would be helpful.....FINAL THOUGHT; If these engines are from Japan would they have the proper chain guides on them?

Ill try and go in order, and BTW welcome to NICO......

Im not sure where the best place to go is, but Id talk with Q45tech to see where T-3 in atlanta gets their engines.......

It is true that the Japanease take out engines DO only have 40-60k..... To make a long story short, they only drive really small distances, and they have a very hard inspection program, and after 60k it becomes financially stupid to keep the car, so they sell it and it eventually gets parted out......

The easiest way to tell if the engine was truely JDM is if there are no precats on the exhaust manifold..... Some have hte JDM plenum, but others that are known to be from Japan dont (IE have the USDM plenum)....

I would assume youd want compression to be in spec (185PSI, with no more than 14 PS difference between cylindersI, minimum is 142)

The engine WILL NOT have the proper chain guides, and those will need to be fixed prior to installation in the car.......

Many of tthjose engine have fewer miles than Wes mentioned, some are quite good while others are not.

Most will need new sensors, plugs etc etc to make them good+ reliable.

I am horrified that you have been without your Q for so long:(

Every once in a while a good engine comes along on ebay.

I don't trust hardly any of the ones found on the net, especially Ebay. What's the word on the JDM plenums? I thought those all said Nissan on them (don't have the Inifiniti logo). My engine with 220k averages around 158 psi on 7 cylinders, with 1 cylinder around 150psi due to a previous injector leak. With 40-60k, an engine should read at least 175-180psi on all 8.

Don't rely on cranking compression testing alone as the rings may expand when hot and not read well cold...........I will mention that my 257k Q engine fails all the cold compression numbers by a wide margin......[scarey numbers like 100 psi] but when warm [operating temp] it meets brand new numbers.

Power balance is perfect and so is the horsepower produced.

Never buy [pay for] an engine without looking inside the oil filler port and removing the valve covers/front cover.

Somebody in Denver imports used engines to replace the Toyota/Honda ones [supplies the independent swap shops], they can get you a Q engine.

Atlanta has 3 companies now each with Q engines. If they don't have it in stock most get a new shipment every 2 weeks [container loads]. $1300-$1500 plus delivery.

We haven't done a 90-93 Q engine swap this year [3 94-95, 1 M30, 2 G20 were done] as the $5000-$5500 Q cost to do it right is beyond most. Easier to just buy a 94-95Q [120k] and start over. Most of our change now are the 6 cylinder Lexus and Infiniti which are $1,000-$1,500 less expensive to accomplish.
