hello,

I tried to run my car but it doesnt start. I drove my car couple of miles it was runnig fine no weird sound or nothing. Then I parked it for about half an hour then it didnt start again. It doesnt even crank.

It feels like I left the gear at D and tried to run the car. I checked the fuse inside the car and it is fine. I believe the battery is fine too since all the other electrical things work inside the car.

Does anyone know how what might have happened. And is there someting that I can do by myself. I am a student and whenever I take this car to mechanic they start from $400. I really appreciate any help.

thanks,

do you hear a "click-click" coming from ur starter when the key is turned??if so try taping the starter with a hammer ... gentle taps...

if no click, try starting it in Neutral. if u think its like the in gear situation, that b a prob with ur shift linkage. but if no click then its probly a bad silonoid/starter

good luck

the starter is located on the passenger side, on the side of the transmission bell house (where the transmission connects to the engine)...

there is a heat shield on it

My car started for no reason today. I went for looking at the starter today and before doing that I decided to try running the car once more. And it started without any trouble. . I played with the cables yesterday may be thats the reason. But thanks for everyone who helped me. I was so depressed yesterday and your replys helped me. I think I should still take the car to a mechanic to check the cables.

Few coments:

The starter consumes a lot of current. It can be tens or even hundreds of amps. So...

Even if you see the lights inside are working and the starter relay clicks the battery can be unable to produce enough current for the starter.

If there is a bad contact somewhere in the starter chain the lights will be working but the contact can have much resistance hence the current will be limited. One of the most common problem here is the bad contact on the battery terminals.

So the first place one should start with in such case - if it clicks but the started does not engage it's to clean the terminals and make sure the contact is tight. At the same time check the battery if it's good.

you guys no what it also could have been the relay in the door switch tell the car to stay in safe mode. now what i mean by that is that i own one too the same thing happened the car runs great one night and the un explainably doesnt work the next day i heard the clicking it was minor... really faint. most of the m30 j30s came with a factory security system. when you open the door from the inside(say you left your window down and open it from the inside instead of using the key and then go to start it with the key in the ignition and nothing that is the security relay in the door sensor. i tried to get jumped and still nothing noticed that my lights were flashing and then it hit me unlock the door from the outside then start it... boom it fired right up...note keep in mind im not a mechanic by any mean but as an owner i know what i did to make it start again it was weird haven't had any starting problems since knock on wood

when you get your car to start take it to autozone and they will test your alternator and battery for free. just make sure that the terminal cables are tight.
