I've been battling a problem where every now and then the idle would drop to 500 ish and then recover. Well I went to attempt and fix that today and when I started the car, it wouldn't idle. It would sit at 500 shooting out massive amounts of black smoke. If you rev it up it'll sometimes rev fine then it'll start to miss. I got to try pulling the plugs but I think I might have a dieing coil pack.

What do you guys think?

Ground wires?

If not, might just want to get a multimeter and check everything under the hood, and I mean everything. Probably something isn't getting proper voltage, what it might be I have no idea.

I don't have as much experience as other around here, but I guess there are several threads with similar issues and after going thru some of them (while dealing with this in my car) I would look into a couple of things:

- IAAC- TPS- Dropping Resistor (bad unit will give you rough idle and rich condition)- Engine Temp Sensor (bad sensor would flood the engine and cause start up issues, plus ECU depends a lot on this)- Plugs- Coils- Timing (maybe)- Maybe grounds too as Tim said

Others would correct me if I'm wrong, but Id go checking around those.

^ Sounds like a great place to start. Get out your FSM and your multimeter and follow the procedures to check all of that. Who knows, you might find some other problems you didn't even know existed!

Replaced the spark plugs. It actually runs now. But it still wouldn't idle. My dad told me adjust the bottom stop screw on the throttle body. I did that until the idle increased to about 1100 or so. Then I came back to the idle control screw on the side of the manifold and lowered the idle with that. It runs practically perfect now.

regardless of how it runs, it may get goofy again and you might of just done a quick fixit for the time being, and that may be hiding a bigger problem, it dont take that long to check all electronics as posted above, plus its quality lovin your car will like you for. wont kill noone to checkmy 2 cents

dude you should seriously check everything said above and then some. the most important thing in modifying cars for us poor folks :P is reliability... you don't want to just make a quick fix and then it dies out on you on the street somewhere... cuz you'll still have to tow it back and still have to fix it... hahaha makes more sense to just fix it the right way the first time around.

i had a lot of idle issues with mine too, but after reading around for the longest time. trying out different things... and even bought a new freaking harness... all it was, was that whoever did the install... grounded the harness for the coilpacks in the wrong place! grounded it to the vavle cover and not the head. idles great now, still has the good old cold start issues from time to time. but at least now it runs properly. well good luck with it.

First off I'm not poor. In fact I'm trying to sell the car to buy an Evo. But anyways. Its fixed for now. If it comes back I'll dig back into it.
