My First Z (1986)

I'm new to the Z cars and forums. My son and I just picked up an 86 300zx for $1600 in St. Louis Sunday. Pretty exited about getting back into working on a project car again.
Need some advice about the speedometer though. It pegs out when you first take off and stays there. Dealer said may be one of two cables. Speedo cable or cruise cable. Cruise cable goes to unbelievably expensive (555.00) cruise module. Any suggestions on where to start troubleshooting?
