Someone recently added this old Motorweek J30 roadtest on youtube. The quality isn't great but it gets better as you watch it.

Cool clip. Good find.

All of you thinking the J is some kind of fast machine, did you see the 1/4 mile time? 16.7 seconds. Not very fast. In comparison, my VW Golf I use to have did a 13.9 second 1/4 mile with about $1000 in mods in it. (Chip, downpipe, pulleys) 3 seconds is an eternity in a 1/4 mile race.

16.9 is not 'pretty good for stock if you think about it', lol. That's like at least a second slower than a stock n/a 300zx 2+2 can do with a good driver.

On that note, maybe getting a JWT chip would bring the J's performance a little closer to a stock 300zx's. I think I read that the J30's ecu is a little different for better fuel economy, hence a little slower. Might be a lie, though.

I'd hope so, for like, $600 or whatever. I thought about it for a little bit myself, but being broke kinda ruined my plans. I'm interested in your dyno numbers, though. You did cams, exhaust, what else was there?

Unfortunately ecu and O2 sensors are set to hold 14.7 AF at cruise so cats work at most efficient point.

This 14.7 AF sets the cruise fuel economy along with desired cruise rpm.All one can do is lower the rpm and thus speed to improve MPG.

If you set accelerator for 2400 rpms ~ 60 mph. That's 3 injector squirts per rev or 3 x 2400 = 7200 injections per mile.

The J30 [3.90] vs 300zx AT [4.083] diff gear means the J30 turns 4.7% fewer rpms at same speed [plus any adjustment for tire loaded circumference].

Sweet. Is that gearing for the NA or TT Z? (I should know...)

I actually learned a lot from that segment. I think it should be a sticky here.

16.7 seconds down the 1/4 mile?!?!?!? I think my Civic can keep up w/it in its state (stock). I think it'll run a 16.5 on the quarter.

Now I know which direction to take the J30 when I get it. I just wish my uncle would see this, because he swears up and down that the J will smack my Civic.

I've smacked a 1997 Integra RS before (on a dry race track). The Integra had a couple of car lengths on me before the J pulled up and beat it on the straightaway. I out cornered the Integra on the turns with my HICAS steering.

Front wheel drive Integra = understeer and braking.

Rear wheel drive J30 with HICAS = accleration and passing opportunities.

Its basically stock.

The super HICAS is a 4 wheel steering systems available on 1993 and 1994 "t" models only.

The trick to racing a J against any other vehicle is picking a course with lots of turns and/or switchbacks. The HICAS steering lets you corner like your on rails. You never have to touch the brakes like most other cars turning in and body roll is imperceptible. I keep my foot on the gas. When you finally hit straightaway, you have big time momentum coming out of the turn. The other car has been braking most of that time and needs to accelerate to catch you.

Sounds like you have a lot of auto-x experience. I'm also assuming that you are older than I am.

See, I have no auto-x experience; just drag racing, & on top of that, I've only been drag racing for 3 years. The J I raced was modified/riced (cone filter, "chop shop" exhaust, oversized wing, etc.), so I guess that says a lot right there. (I'll post a pic of it later.) Then again, it did run in the 10.70s range (1/8 mile track) to my 10.50s. That's with a 0.050ish reaction time.

Yeah...auto-x isn't big here in Alabama...just NASCAR & drag racing.

Nothin' wrong with that. I'm in the NES (Nintendo Entertainment System) era, circa 1985.

For real!!!! I play Pong via my emulators on my laptop. Gotta love those old-school games. *lol*

Seriously, my opinion on why people think that the J30 is "fast" is because of the brand name: Infiniti. People are recognizing that the G35 is quick & luxurious, so they expect for the J30 to be the same way, especially since it was replaced by the I30, next the I35, then the G35.

@ least, that's how I think it goes...correct me if I'm wrong.

When the J30 debuted it was marketed as a "personal luxury" sedan, it really wasn't supposed to be a fast car even though it shared the 300zx engine, more like a boulevard cruiser. I have an Iomega disk somewhere, where I have a copy of a 4 minute J30 "movie" commercial that played during I think the 1993 Superbowl. The commercial is interesting because it markets the vehicle as "finer thing in life" or luxury good rather than a performance car.

Oh, & I posted the wrong ET's for those races that night. My bad.

The first run, I ran a 10.78 to his 10.73. However, I has a 0.1 something RT to his 0.8 something, so I had him by a couple of lengths.

The second run was better for me; me running a 10.60 to his 10.78. I had close to 0.05ish RT on that one to his 0.555 something. But both races I beat the guy by 2-3 car lengths. I was expecting to lose, but I found myself looking in my rear view mirror to see if he broke!!!
