My SES light was cleared out and came back on immediately after starting the engine, so according to NISTECH's post, I have a sensor problem and not a solenoid problem. I took it to the dealer and they said that "both" intake timing sensors were faulty and needed to be replaced. My understanding was that P1140 was for the right (passenger) side and P1145 was for the left (driver) side. I want to either fix this myself or have an independent mechanic do it, but was confused with the "both" sensor diagnosis. Are there two sensors on the right side or can a failure in the left side also cause a p1140 code and not a p1145?

Sounds like a ton of people are having this problem. I noticed that Nissan has a voluntary recall for a similar sensor in the 01 Sentra. I wonder how many of these will have to break before they recall it? I complained to Nissan when the dealer said it wasn't covered by my warranty, but no luck.

Thanks,John

first of all John very observant of you on the sentra recall. In actuality the engine sensor recall effects several models using similar sensors. The sensor may not be the same part # as the ones in the recall, But all the sensors on those recalls and the ones for your variable timing sensors are the same type of sensor. The diference is physical orientation of the blade to mount layout. I suspect they are trying to do some preventative maint. you could very easilyreplace this sensor your self it is held in by only 1 bolt. slides out and new one slides right in. I dont know if they will ever recall those sensors, I do know however the 350z and the murano are listed on the engine sensor campaign but I have yet to see a customer come in with a letter to have it done.

to answer your question, you can just replace the one sensor for now just wait till the code comes up for the other sensor.

Thanks for the help. Funny that they wouldn't just tell me that one needed to be replaced and the other was preventative. Probably because most people wouldn't pay the extra money for the preventative maintenance.

Thanks again,

John
