I have a stock 92 240sx. I am Having the typical stuttering power and idle problems except it has gotten so bad my car wont stay running. my car died on me the other night.

I knew I had a loose mafs connection so I wiggled it, power changed but no go, So I disconnected it and it actually ran smoother but Idled higher. Car wouldn't get over 3k and then continuously died. got home and ecu kicked out a code 12(car not running). but i dont know if that is because Its bad or because I disconnected it while running.

So I guess I need to make sure the mafs is bad before I chunk out $50-$75for a junk lot special.

Any help would be appreciated

Well I would start off with a visual inspection of the filiments I believe there should be 2 of them in the MAF make shure they arn't broken. When you unplug your MAF the computer goes into a safe mode condition where it runs simpified fuel maps and as you found out limits your RPM the FSM explains this. Since you said it actually got better I would asume that the MAF is your problem if you know anybody with a 240 you could borrow there MAF and see if that fixes it.

do u just disconnect the battery terminals, take off the MAFS and put in another?or is it more complicated than that? i mean do u have to mess with the ecu or will the ecu adjust automatically?

no...you can just switch the MAF and it should just be fine.. I broke my filiment on my maf and all I did was unplug the bat, switch the MAF and reset the ECU for good mesures.... you can find out how to do this without going to the ECU in the FAQ section of http://www.240sx.org... it's something like, turn your key to the on position without starting the car and then pressing the door sensor like 7 or 8 times or somerhing....it's something like that if I remember correctly... but pretty simple... check out thr FAQ and it will tell you how...
