Is there an Infiniti mechanic out there that can tell me what the symptoms would be for a faulty or intermittent throttle position sensor switch on a 1991 M30? I'm especially interested in the effect a faulty sensor would have on the way the transmission shifts.

I'm not a technician, or even a mechanic, but here's my understading of it.

The TPS is the feedback for your transmission that lets it know the throttle plate's position - in other words how much you're pressing on the gas pedal. Poor or irratic shifting could be caused by the TPS not working correclty.

If you have a service manual it'll tell you how to check it with an ohm meter, or have someone hook it up to Consult and read the TPS voltage.

I wouldn't automatically assume that if the car is shifting poorly - then you need to replace the TPS. You could also have transmission problems.
