I had a 2000 2.5 Z3 which is lighter than a 3 series.
The the 2.3 and 2.5 were the same engines and were making around 270 in those years and I could barely squeak out an indicated 148 downhill with the lighter car. But BMW speedos are known for reading a bit high in the upper ranges so that's probably more like a real 135-140 downhill.
Due to the horsepower he says he has I suspect he has a 325. I doubt he actually put an M3 transmission in it but I suspect they all used the same 5 speed (since the Euro Ms got a 6 speed and it would make sense for BMW to continue useing parts they already had on the US car).
In contrast my M is still pulling pretty good at 155 and is limited by gearing to around 175.
