idk about new but you can find one with about 5k to 10k miles on it for that price. Look at the LS forums http://ls1tech.com/forums if you poke around long enough u can find a good deal.

Would be an interesting project but I'd recommend doing a lot of research before jumping in such as how much that engine weighs, dimensions, wiring etc. Swaps can be a very expensive and long project where as an upgraded turbo engine will drop right in and have the potential to put out a lot more than 405 hp

You can get one with a transmission for $5-$6k. Those aren't crap motors. They require custom mounts/crossmembers for the engine and transmission. You need to cut the firewall to fit a T-56 (assuming you're going manual). A lot of work, but HUGE gains. I have a full conversion manual for an LS1 swap, if you're interested.

You could get an LS1 (preferably from a GTO since its oil pan sump will fit) and a T-56 (BEST F****** TRANSMISSION IN THE WORLD!!!!!!) for like $4k-$4.5k. If you wanted an even cheaper route, you could get an LT1 (but it weighs about 70lbs more then the LS1).

If you're willing to trade a few pounds for a couple grand, you can get more power out of a 6.0L LQ4. Same basic engine, but bigger displacement, with a more stout iron block. Of course the downside is you gain some weight going iron. But, you can make 500hp without much work on that motor.

Just another idea for you.

How far back can you find trucks with the LQ4? like 1999?

yes, the LQ4 was built in 2500 series trucks starting in '99. If you plan to go with a manual trans, you'll need a 01 or up. The 99 and 00 models had a crank flange machined to only fit the 4l80 transmission. To fit a T56 in an early year you'd have to swap the crank. You can do it, but it's a pain.

The LQ4 has a wider bore, so it turns out to be 6.00L. That wider bore allows you to use the L92 heads designed for the new 6.2L motors that make big HP. Those heads are awesome, and cheap! You can get them fully assembled from GMPP for like $400 each through summit racing or other places.

You can find LQ4's used through car-parts.com or on ls1tech.com or other places pretty cheap. You'll find one for less than $1000 easy. I have two of them, and didn't even pay $1000 for the two combined. '

Another popular choice is the 5.3L. I forget the engine code on that one. They are also significantly cheaper than the ls1. They are aluminum so not as heavy. They are easy to find used because they came in tons of 1500 series trucks for years. You can modify them nicely as well and get plenty of hp. You could always add nitrous as well.

If you really want to do this, I'd spend some time at this site
