Here’s the rather unpleasant result of an encounter with a rather large rabbit at something like 60+ km/h…

Front bodywork is reasonably repairable, under tray can be replaced (second time this spring!), but both rads will have to be replaced. Oddly enough, the rads are still functioning perfectly and not leaking, even though the bottom of the air con rad is pushed back into the coolant rad which is pushed back another 1-2 inches! But no telling how long the rads will remain functional. At least the car is driveable in the meantime…

Insurance? NO… car was taken by unlicensed son without permission… had no choice but to report it, so if I claim it, they pay, then they go after him for restitution, which ultimately means they are going after me! Catch-22. Anyone want to adopt a 17-year-old?

Seems the rabbit ran out of the ditch then stood up at point of impact. Front licence plate was bent under at lower edge (shattering a Stillen licence plate frame - hey, are they warranteed against rabbits? LOL), lower grill was cracked in a few places, and bottom of factory nose was split in a couple of places near the center, with fur stuck in the lowest crack. But no pieces missing, and the fractures are nearly invisible. Rabbit then went under the nose and apparently ricocheted up through the (new) under tray and into the lower rad face, inflicting the worst damage.

Then again, I suppose if you were the rabbit, you might view the worst damage a bit differently…

I say his punishment should be to pick out every single rock out of your radiator.

If my brother (17 years old, I'm 24) ever even THOUGHT of taking my car I would file charges. I say your son is going to make it out alive but yeah s*** happens right. Probably feeling bad enough about it is almost punishment enough sometimes... Although I'd make him work all summer to pay for it lol.

Ah well, at least he didn't get hurt right? Thats the main thing. I always hear stories of teens taking the parents car and not making it back home. The neighbour's kid to her car a couple months ago. Brand new Jetta TDI. Smashed it at the end of the street. Kid didn't know how to drive a manual trans car. I was suprised he made it that far.

Damage: 6500 bucks...

I think I did a pic of the ground-kit install, or something like that... or maybe the intake... ironically, both are partially visible in this pic.

Also ironic, I was going to post a brake paint post... maybe I still will... at least that stuff is done and not destroyed!

Good Gosh; how big do y'all grow your rabbits up there in Canada, I call them comacosie bunnies, I swear they don't run across the road until it's too late and they will get ran over, on a side note appearently rabbits are exteremely nervous animals and when they do manage to cross the road untouched (very rare) they still die of a heart attack.

Daayum!! My bf hit a deer in (well actually it ran into) his car a few months ago & it didn't do that much damage!!

That sucks so bad!!!! Ugggghhhh...So sorry this happened to your Coupe.Darn rabbits...& teenagers! lol

But on another note, I can completely sympathize with your situation! My best friend & I lived around the corner when we were younger & 1 day while I was out but my car was home. She drove past my house & saw my little sister outside about to drive my car. She didn't have her license, only her permit, so my girlfriend hopped in the car with her & let her drive around a few blocks (bc my sister would've done it anyway, so at least this way there was a licensed driver in the car) then she took the keys & left so she couldn't drive after she left. I was obviously not happy to hear this, but she assured me this had been the only time.

Fast forward a few months she got her license, but never had a job, so didn't have a car & consequently didn't have insurance. On the night of her high school graduation she asked if she could take my car. I said no & went upstairs...where she promptly grabbed my keys & took my car & drove to her graduation. (Precisely why my girlfriend got in the car with her when she saw her about to drive my car months prior...bc she does whatever she wants..symptom of 'youngest child syndrome') Well on her way home from her graduation she was tryin to be cool (but didn't kno how to work my system) & was messin w/ the stereo & smashed into a car that stopped in front of her. My car was a 6 yr old Mustang that I had bought cash. Since it was 6 yrs old, I only had Liability Insurance on it. So I then had to pay out of pocket to fix my car & in order for my Insurance Co. to pay for the car she hit (to which there was a lot of damage) I had to add her to my policy. *side note: I returned my graduation present for her!!*

My answer was to make her do something I had been doing since I was 15...I made her get a job!! But not just any job! I got her a job where I worked. I was a manager at a tanning salon. So I got her hired as a boothcleaner. She spent the summer before she was leaving for college, wiping up other people's sweat off of tanning booths all day... Made me feel a little better. Hope you can think of something equally as unpleasant to recoup some money.

Why didn't you just report to your insurance that YOU hit the stupid rabbit?

(Besides the whole honesty thing of course. )

LBC, there was rabbit fur embedded in the cracks in the nose...
BlackNWhite wrote:Why didn't you just report to your insurance that YOU hit the stupid rabbit?
BnW, I had to report it to the cops. My son is out on bail for a minor charge. If I hadn't reported it, and it turned out that the accident had been something other than a rabbit, I could have been charged and would also have lost the bail money.

So now I have a crunched car and his bail has doubled. That's two strikes against him, one more and he's out!

Sucks that if he would have just missed the rabbit none of this would have happened. Live and learn huh? Kids . . .

Oh well. Seems like everything is turning out to be the best it could, minus having to pay for all the repairs. If handled well, this might end up being one of those life lessons that he reminisces about when he's older.

Sorry to hear about the coupe Ferg. Look on the bright side, at least your son is alright. Did he tell you he was going 60km/hr? Because it looks like he might have been going a little faster... Anyway, cars can fixed it just takes some money which is unfortunate.

Goodluck!

Look at it this way, one more year and you'll (legally?) be able to kick him out if you want.

Any idea how much it'll cost to repair everything?

Not yet... took off the front end and we put the lower grill back together with JB Weld epoxy (no pieces were missing but several were cracked)... but there is still a split in the lower nose. I have a Stillen lip but thankfully it wasn't yet on the car... it will hide the split. Although I will have to replace the rads, the AC rad oddly does not leak and the coolant rad loses about a cup a week. I don't have a firm quote on the rads yet but I've heard it could be as much as $1500...

Ranga, I have more respect for rabbits than to let him eat it! I'm thinking bread and water for a year!

I had a bird take out my driver side fog light last year. I was on a bend on the highway doing about 120km/hr and this bird just decided to fly really low. I was heart broken for a bit that I killed a bird. A few kms down the road I pulled over still feeling bad that I killed a bird, I checked the front and was like ' MY LIGHT!!!!'
