Car: Looking to buy 2002 Frontier 3.3 S/C Crew 4X4

Post

I am looking at a 2002 Frontier with the 3.3 S/C engine in a crew cab 4X4. I don't even know what engine code that it is as I am an old Chevy guy from way back. I was wondering about timing belt replacement because I don't have any proof that it has been done. Vehicle has 101,000 miles on it but it is in immaculate condition. Also, what about the maintenance on the super-charger? Is there something that I need to know about it as far as preventive maintenance? Lastly, does anyone know the rear end gear ratio? Thanks very much in advance.

timing belt on that engine should be replaced anytime a vehicle is purchased with a VG, which is the type of engine you have. rear end gears are probly like 4.36's being that its most likely an auto. I have no idea about supercharger maintenance because I have never owned one. peace.

I'm not sure on the rear end ratio, but the full engine code for the S/C motor is VG33ER. The "R" denotes the supercharger. It's a single overhead cam 12 valve V6. Info on the VG33E and VG30E (the normally aspirated variants of the motor) will generally apply to your motor as well.Just in case you're not familiar with Nissan engine designations, VG is the engine "family", the numbers are obviously the displacement, and the "E" indicates electronic fuel injection.

I believe (but am not 100% sure) that timing belt replacement interval on the later truck VGs was 90k miles.

The VG's a reliable motor, if a bit on the short side of power in stock form. As long as you keep the oil changed on schedule and perform basic maintenance, the engine should go another 100,000 miles without complaint.

The axle code is on the door jamb sticker. You can decode it using my Axle sticky in this forum, but it's mostly likely an HG46 - H233B rear axle with 4.636:1 gearing.

The supercharger is notorius for going out at about 75k miles, so I wonder if that's been replaced. The service interval for the timing belt on a VG33 is at 105k, so right off you're looking at the cost of that (lots cheaper if you can tackle it yourself), but do consider that in the purchase price of the truck.
