little tire rubbing ok?

A great resource for Nissan Sentra, Infiniti G20, 200sx, Pulsar, NX1600, NX2000, Tsuru, Primera and Sunny owners.

Just put 17x8's on my car with 245/40/17 tires and I'm experiencing just the slightest bit of rub when I turn all the way to either side. It looks like it's rubbing on the strut just a tad.

Obviously, this isn't ideal, but will I be OK?

Put a 5mm spacer on and solve the problem.

Any idea where I could find a decent 5mm wheel spacer? What should I be looking for in a good wheel spacer? Are there any dangers/adverse effects in using wheel spacers?

Though PepBoys sell cheap spacers, im a fan of the Eibachs.

Btw, what is your offest?

I think I mentioned in a different thread, but I went from a 17x8 +40, to my current setup which is a 17x8 +48. Both setups had 245/40/17 tires on them. I don't think I had any rubbing on the previous setup.

I'm thinking about biting the bullet and going the safest way and dropping down to a 235/45/17. That's a full 10mm narrower... Thoughts?

Just get some 225/40/17's and be done... Or just try wheel spacers. I wish you lived around me I would give you a pair.. I even bought them at Pepboys and they were fine. Btw? are these rims custom rims or stock rims?

Here's the full story:

Bought the car used which already had 17x8 (+40) gram light 57s on them. Driving it home as the blizzard started to hit us roughly 3 wks ago, I slid into a curb and the front left wheel took the brunt of the impact...cracked a ~2inch piece of the wheel off. I'll never forgive myself for this.

Fast forward: I replaced them with 17x8 Rota Boost (+48) wheels. I didn't want to spend a boatload to replace the wheels and since that particular gram light is discontinued, I couldn't just replace that one.

I'm leaning towards just buying a smaller set of tires, now the question becomes, is 235/45/17 going to be good for this rim size/width? I'd like to go a step wider than stock, especially since the wheels are 1" wider.

Oh, and thanks for the offer with the wheel spacers, but I just feel like it'd be safer and look nicer with the 235 tires on there...

see the problem is the offest. You pushed the face of the rim outward, which pulls the rest of the rim inward. So where you originally had an inch of clearance around your suspension, now you dont. You can go to a smaller tire, but your gonna get the same results.

But considering that the only thing that changed was going from a +40 to a +48 offset, wouldn't that mean that the extra 8mm is what's causing the problem?

My reasoning was going down to a 235 width tire would give me 10mm, thus solving the problem. Am I thinking about it the wrong way?

so you rather change the rim diameter, then use a wheel spacer?

Your effectively moving the rim 8 mm closer to the suspension from the center line, however there's more to it then that. Overall, your 23mm closer to your suspension. Nearly an inch.

OK, I think I see what you're saying. Would wheel spacers change the handling characteristics (negatively) of my car noticably?

Would you recommend going with something like an eibach 30mm spacer kit? For all 4 wheels of course?

Most quality wheel spacers will give you better handling, simply because your tracking is wider.
