attached is a picture of some rust I discovered on my passenger side under the rear door... It seems odd that I have this rust spot here because i have no other rust and compared to my other Q and other Qs ive worked on my Q seems less "rusty"..

Does this look like something I could prevent from getting worse by taking my dremel, sanding it down and then repainting it, or would this be something id want to get fixed professionally.... id like to do something about it before winter rolls around.

Its not relaly as bad as it looks but i used the macro mode on my camera to ensure the highest quality.

my qhad similar spots in both dog legs, cought it before it was as noticable as yours, but none the less, got a bodyshop to repair.my guess is they are rusting from the inside out,so most repairs, including mine are cosmetic at best,as the internal cavity probobly is much worse than what we see from the outside.common on almost every 90-96 q I look at in maryland, along with drivers side rear wheel lip rust bubbling near where rear bumper meets the wheel opening-had that fixed also, bubble already reappearing in less than 3 months-again,rust starting from the inside, rear of panel-no way to permanently repair without replacing quarterpanel or patching in a new piece of metal.

Looks like it is coming up from underneath.

Once you clean it up, I fear there may not be enough metal to repair without some welding.

O.M.G Wes! You have to sell it before it gets any worse! I don't know if you can save it now. What have you been waiting for? How much do you want for it? I want to buy it before you let the whole bottom rust out!!

Young kids just don't know how to take care of a fine automobile.

I had Maaco give me an estimate of $550 because both rear door entries of mine have rust similar to yours. Needless to say, I had sticker shock from that. You might be better off buying some por15 and doing it yourself with a dremel. Amsoil makes a gear lube(MP Heavy Duty Metal Protector) which has excellent anti-rust characteristics. I have sprayed the underside of all my cars with it and it really keeps it looking new and virtually rust proof. It produces a waxy film that also lubricates.

I will eventually get the por15 kit as thats all you really need for a small section. The Amsoil product will really amaze you.

This is not unusual, and the rust is from the inside out.

On my first Q from Massachusetts Infiniti repaired rust in this exact same spot for me under warranty. I had professionals fix it on my second Q from Kansas.

I'd get a pro to repair the rust... all my attempts previous rust repair attempts on other cars seemed to cause rust to grow more quickly. If you don't do it right, do it simple. Just use a pencil eraser to remove surface rust without loosening things up too much and cover it with touch up paint. I got this technique from a profesional, too. Anything in between seems to make rust grow more quickly. Also be sure to spray some POR15 or other rust "preventative" in the door sills too.

In both Q's with the rust repair work, the rust never came back.
