Just wondering if this can be done safely. If I'm correct the CA18DET is a externally balanced engine, so could doing this mess up the balancing? And what would be the safe amount to lighten the flywheel by?

Nicholas.

if you're putting out enough power/torque for a stage 5 clutch, lightening stock is FAR outta the question... unless you want that to be a possibiility...

When lightening the rotational assembly you must look at more than just the flywheel. Are you going to run lightweight pulleys? Anything for the crank?

There are formulas you can use (I have a thick book on automotive math) to calculate exactly what you can expect to gain from lightening. An average of 2hp per pound shed can be seen. I will be knife-edging my crank, as well as lighter pulleys, flywheel, and driveshaft. The balance maintained by lightening the whole assembly keeps some reliability into the equation.

I could probably post a picture of the whiteboard in my house full of all these numbers on it, lol.

The stock iron piece has to be stronger than an aftermarket aluminum. I've thought about lightening the stock piece as well
