my starter is making one hell of a noise on start...like something sticking, dragging, gnashing noise. So I guess I let it make noise until it won't start at all? Or should I replace it now? It seems to get worse with time...Can I do the replacement myself? I heard it is a pain..I have done all the suspension work, brakes, plenum, etc. so I am able but if the exhaust header has to come off on pass side then I will take it somewhere? Any help here would be great...Q45tech anybody?

Have heard stories (and seen firsthand from my old 240Z rebuilding days )where the solenoid does not fully extend, causing the strarter to grind up the teeth on your flywheel. And I think you know what happens when you have to replace your flywheel right???

Yeah... grinding sounds like something you need to have checked out. Pulling the transmission for a flywheel is a lot of labor. Starter failure is rare, but I guess anything is possible on a 14 year old car! IF you have to replace the starter, make sure you go with OEM parts or even a low mileage salvage yard take-out. Remanufactured electrical parts seem to be more trouble than they're worth.

When ever you buy something used, always disassemble and clean and rehab it yourself..........sitting for years without moving is a problem.........engine, transmission, diff, starter, CAS, IAC, brake calipers, fans.............easy to rehab a working starter.......some fine sand paper and a fine tiny file.

The starter shouldn't take you more than 4-5 hours with a lift and all the tools.............easy compared to the plenum located starter on the LS400.

Careful about letting someone else do it we see them swapped all the time with the top bolt missing.

So does the passenger side exhaust manifold get in the way of the removal? I really don't want to have to remove it..AND Thanx for all the help guys!...George.
