I bought my Coupe last December, right after I took the LSAT, but right before I got my results. At the time, I had estimated that the car payment and insurance might be a bit of an adjustment, but certainly something I could handle.

Then I got my results, and came to the conclusion that I wanted to take them again, and would thusly put off law school for another year. After taking the LSAT for a second time in March and receiving my score a number of weeks later, I applied at the urging of my girlfriend, fully anticipating that I would be denied, being that I was beginning the application process after the deadline had been reached.

Because I was accepted, however, this summer has been one long scramble for cash, and I've been looking every which way to cut expenses. Weeks ago, I had assumed that my car would be one to take the hit. To express my dire straits, I should emphasize that it looked like I would be replacing my 2008 Altima Coupe 3.5SE with a 1994 Celica GT.

My parents, not wanting to see me part with the car that sits atop my list of prized possessions, and apparently getting tired of my refusal to accept their offers of "early Hanukah presents" to pay for law school had reached a compromise: they would loan me about $300/mo, leaving me with $100/mo+insurance+gas+maintenance.

The good news: I keep my car.The bad news: I'm not as independent as I really want to be.

if you don't mind me asking what was your GPA after graduating? I'm doing pre-med and I feel as if I'm going to be in the same situation as you in a couple years unless my MCAT scores are really high =/

Congrats in getting accepted to Law School bro. Parents are there for support and comfort dude. With them lending you $300 a month ensure to them that you will be happy in law school because you get to keep one of your most prized possessions which is your AC. Think about it this way bro when you graduate Law School and become a Lawyer you will be able to pay your parents their money back with interest or help them out in many different ways. When I was 18 my parents dropped thousands upon thousand of dollars into an Electric Company that I wanted to start. I was a kid straight outta high school and had this idea. My parents never doughted me for a second and gave me the amounts I asked for. At the end they had given me 850K no BS. Now 5 years later my company is one of the most successful Transportation Electrical Systems Installers in the Socal area. It's bringing in roughly 700-900 Million a year. I took classes and joined the Electrical Union so I only hire Union electricians. The moral of my story is that parents will support their children in any way or manner to make sure that their children are happy . Don't feel bad that they are letting you borrow $300 a month to help you with your car because they know that when you graduate Law School it was well torth it for them to see you happy that you reached your goals with minimal sacrafices.

hey ricky, i was wondering does the electrical union up there deal with telecommunications? Also hows work up there man, is it busy? I was planning on moving to vegas or somewhere in cali but I was scared of not being able to find work. Im in the electrical union too but I only work with low voltage stuff like telecom and fire alarms. Im still going through my apprenticeship classes too. Living in hawaii is too expensive. With the money Im making I could afford a house easily up there but down here, its hard. Let me know man, thanks.

Oh and as for your coupe, man thats just what parents do. My parents paid for 75% of my tuition when i went to get my a**. degree in electronics. After graduating and got a good job, whenever they need help, Im happy to give them some money. In fact, I give them money even if they dont need it. I always treat my family to all kinds of things man. Feels good to be able to help my family out at times. Take the help that theyre offering right now but remember to do the same when they need it.

Stanks, I had between a 3.1 and a 3.2 GPA, and my LSAT score was in the 84th percentile. I was accepted to a tier-one school (ranked 47th in 2008) for part-time evening classes. If you're worried about your grades and your score, remember that you have complete control over the essay. It's my estimation that my ability to write overcame what my GPA lacked.

yeah right now I'm sitting at a 3.3 but the classes are only going to get harder but I'm pretty confident that my GPA can stay in this range and luckily I'm a pretty good writer also. It's good to here that you got accepted wish you the best.

1st, to IB coupe, congratulations on getting accepted into law school. Parents WANT to help out their children, even when the children want to be more independent. I think the fact that you wish to be more independent makes them want to help you out even more.

"Those who ask for everything will get nothing... those that ask for nothing will get everything" ... congrats again

To Ricky... stop bragging...lol.. I'm just joking. I love your story as well, and was impressed when we discussed it over beers at TGIF!!!

To stankydanky, 1st thing you should do is change your online name. You may not think things like this matter much, but they do if the wrong person puts two and two together. Second, writing is a very small part of the MCAT and is actually the least important part. Your personal statement will only take you so far if other aspects of your application are lacking. Even with your GPA, there are things that you can do between now and when you apply that will mak you a better all around candidate, and some of those things can be tailored to your individual story. If you are seriuous about getting into medical school, shoot me an email, you never know who you may run into on these forums

Stanks:

Thanks, mate, and good luck to you, too.

Rjd:

Thanks for the encouragement, and I'm going to have to second everything you said right here:

I heard so many times from each of my professors that you need to do a "facebook purge." Get rid of anything you wouldn't show your mother, Stanks.

Also, rjd probably knows better than I do about the importance of writing. I was referring mostly to the admissions letter, but it's entirely plausible that a medical school will look at your writing ability far less than a law school will. I mean: look at your average doctor's hand-written note!

yeah I know what y'all mean about the name...had no clue what to put as a screenname and it was just a little inside joke thinking not too many people would actually read to far into it bad decision on my end

lol... not just the handwriting, but the abiulity to write/type/construct long documents seems paramount in law... for medicine, the majority of our writing is writing patient notes, and that's not usually the most grammatically correct thing you will read.. its always filled with medical jargon that would not makes sense to others... but yeah, I def changed a few things about my facebook page when I found out my professors, and worst yet my PARENTS were on facebook lol... anyway, keep us updated on your progress through law school IBcoupe... and stanky... nope Ricardo, get at me regarding the med school application process. I responded to someone in the General Discussion section of the ALtima forum yesterday.. there may be some useful info for you in there!
