im having some major problems and have been trouble shooting for a few days. First having a problem starting, after long cranking it would start but it would take a while, after it starts it would sputter for a few seconds and if i hit the throttle it would sputter more. This was again only the beginning. Next the idle would begin to increase and decrease from 1k-1.5k or 1.7k. So i put new plugs...nothing changed, i then got a dizzy cap, helped a lil but still had the problems, i then seafoamed the engine, didn't help...so i had to live with the problem hoping that it lived for a month more untill i could work on it. im going to college and dont have much money. so yesterday comes around and i bought a TPS thinking that it could be bad. installed today and didnt help at all. Took a trip to get some oil and filter seeing that my oil was really dirty and was getting low. change it and same problem. now its sputtering harder right untill 3k RPMS and if i floor it the idle would be at 1.7k then DROP!! to 500rpms then sputter hard then increase with sputter till 3k. iv also noticed some smoke after the sputtering. im thinking its just left over fuel b/c it smells like gas.

i know kinda long but its just everything that iv tried. im leaning to the IACV or MAF. need some help here guys, X-mas is coming and the money is going faster and faster.

thz alot

your MAF probably needs to be cleaned. also check if your spark plugs are in the correct place

i thought so but it doesnt seem like a MAF problem. it seems like its running too rich as if its putting too much fuel under throttle and idle idk... will have some more info in the morning about it but for more ideas..

last time when i looked at my plugs they were black but it could of just been old plugs it would be the first time i changed them since i bought the car and also i dont have many tools.... yah i know it sucks but hopfully i will have enough money to get me at least a ok set of tools to work with.

and when i unpluged the MAF the car died. so im guessing that its not the problem or maybe its just reading too much air going threw....idk but will check the plugs ASAP. any new ideas??

when u installed ur new TPS did u calibrated via voltmeter...u cant just pop it in and be done...it has to read like .5 V at idle or something...i think

i stand corrected...read this thread zerothread/296898

Disconnect the vacuum line to the fuel pressure regulator and see if anything changes.....sounds to me like its a fueling problem....also, set up that new TPS like the book says......just my 2 sents

Have you checked your ECU codes yet? My bet is the coolant temp sensor. Its dumping mass quantities of gas when cold and never shows the ECU that the car has warmed up.

ok can someone plz tell me the correct location for the ECU is it on the passenger side or the driver side...lol i know a stupid question but yes i dont know and i seem to keep getting different answers...

o and i just got the IACV new form autozone but it was $125 and i really would rather not put it on and find it that it wasnt the IACV. so now the only problem that i have now is the high idle...and its super high...close to 2k rpms..

Hey buddy, in s13's its on the right most passenger kick panel.

Remove the closest screw on the side door seal attached to the frame, then the three of four screws for the kick panel. There should be two screw keeping the ecu in, remove them, then rotate the ecu counter clockwise.

I'm having similar problems in my idle thread; so make sure you post if you find resoultion :P

ok so today i replaced the IACV and the high idle is now gone but now im having a different problem. well i had to screw in the idle screw all thwe way and it is still 1k and when i rev high and let the rpms drop with the clutch disengaged, the rpms drop really fast and it died on me once. but it ussaly drops to 500rpms...i was wondering if this could be form a hose leak or something else. iv solved most of my problems and this problem jsut stated when it almost dies. THZ for the help
